Student Loan Debt Forgiveness 10-20k

I specifically declined a PPP loan and counseled others to do the same, despite the government's draconian and destructive shutdown mandates. Go ahead and check the publicly available lists.

 

What does or does not occur to me really is of no concern of yours.

 

A reasonable point. The government seems to misspend significant amounts of money. I don't get the rather bizarre assumption that because people aren't happy about the transfer of student loan debt they somehow automatically support subsidies to business or PPP. Oh well you got screwed in that case so you should be okay about being screwed in this case. Or for that matter that every single element is the same thing and on a level playing field.

 

I can tell you why. There are a number of congressmen and/or representatives who are angrily tweeting about this plan. Turns out, a lot of them took out PPP loans in the hundreds of thousands to millions, loans which were forgiven. Hypocrites.

The off-topic conversation was getting a bit "close" since it's now within about two or less degrees of separation on numerous fronts.

With Sesta-Fosta, CA AB-5, the unionizations (which should be trying co-ops instead), and more businesses getting into trouble for incorrectly classifying workers in the trade as independent contractors... people should expect to see more politicians coming from the trade.

The real question is, why does the double standard persist that male politicians "frequenting" people in the trade (either currently or historically) is semi-acceptable to fully acceptable, while having someone from the trade in public office is so taboo?

That article also mentions a situation that is two degrees of separation from me. I could make a list of all these "scandals" but the fact is that if our country was setup to be equitable... much of this would not be an issue. For now, these stories ruin the lives of people. In this instance, a very nice woman who was already struggling financially from being immuno-compromised. From what I recall she has lyme which caused her to not be able to earn much. After the scandal... she was essentially blacklisted.

Without getting into too much detail, although I think one person on the board will know who/what I am talking about, someone who is two degrees of separation from me (and was in the trade) is receiving a pardon and may be able to get into public office. She was told by the Governor's office on Friday, after being told she was granted the pardon, that she should run for public office. I have no doubt that people would vote her in based on an extremely public situation she went through that gained international attention where many in the community now view her as a hero.

Times are changing. Maybe what we really need in this world is the next version of Earl Long, but willing to step aside for a new generation of politicians from less traditional backgrounds.

As for the blind trust, Johann, the majority will say "No". We are talking about people who, for good reason, are notoriously distrustful of others when it comes to their assets.

As for Biden's plan in regards to all of this, let's just say he has just made it easier for some from the trade to be able to access the political platform.

Oh! Thank God. I have no students debt of my own. I have been enrolled in some sort of higher education since I graduated high school in 1982.Thanks to my parents, American Tax Prayers (GI Bill and Tuition Assistance), and a bit out of my own pocket, I have been able to pay as I go. Now I am the co-signer (actually financer of my daughter's student loans,. As parents, we feel we are obligated to finance her education. I will not complain about getting a tiny bit of help from my fellow tax prayers. I could blather on about this on for a long time.
I am still observing a self-imposed abstinence from political commentary. That Said, I understand many people are angry. I have a dear friend who just went into the trades instead of going to college, often he worked several jobs at the same time. He is now an industrial engineer at a huge multi a huge multinational corporation anf an instructor at a state technical and community college. He is very successful despite having no formal education. However, he is an expert in many fields. He literally busted his ass and taught himself. I empathize with him and others who are not thrilled with paying off the debts of those who cannot or will not pay their their own loans.

On the other hand, I never agreed that the purpose of tertiary education should be aligned with specific career plans. We often overlook what I think should be the purpose of undergraduate education - Just simply learning how to learn.

First of all, thanks for your military service. You earned the GI Bill and this country needs more people like you to join and serve as the military falls short in meeting its recruiting goals! The GI Bill (College Tuition) coupled with obtaining a trade was the main reason I joined.

I think this "student loan forgiveness" concept should be debated in Congress. If anything, this forum is evidence of the need to debate the issue. For example, perhaps the 600+ billion dollars in relief could be used to give interest-free student loans to all students for the next hundred years. That's a legacy we can live with!

 

I wish I had gotten the GI Bill.

You do know that the government FORCED these businesses to close? Otherwise, they would need zero dollars.

The government is like the abusive boyfriend that beats a girl so badly that he breaks the girl's arm. Then wants credit for driving the girl to the hospital and paying for it.

 

Just have to point out that the sex of the politicians was never mentioned in the lighthearted exchange, and both men and women can be and are strippers.

I don't know about the double-standard part with regard to men frequenting vs. women selling in this context, because regardless of some exceptions here and there, I'm pretty sure a man's political career would be destroyed by his past as a John especially if it led to arrests and/or charges that are on record. I remember Jerry Springer's political career was rocked when he was found to have used checks (lol) on two different occasions to pay for prostitutes and he resigned from his seat. He was eventually able to make a comeback, but his past as a John lingered and was heavily used against him by his opponents in his unsuccessful run for Governor.

Having said all of that, what you responded to wasn't meant to be taken seriously, sometimes joking is just joking. Quite frankly, I don't see most if any high state and federal politicians as being above pornstars and prostitutes and in my view are more akin to them than they are dissimilar, so I have no dog in that fight. But there is no question that there was a time, for a long time, where a candidate's past mattered and certain professions and actions that many people still do see as seedy eliminated a candidate from any chance at a political career in the United States because of the widely accepted understanding that past behavior can be a predictor of future behavior, and if a candidate's past behaviors were bad enough he/she were considered a risk. People pretty much always saw it as unnecessary to take that risk when there were candidates without those bad known pasts.

 

Yes, I know many men in the trade, and have counted numerous among my friends.

What really got me was when Trump was voted into office, having had a certain recent relationship where the person obviously had background information which should not have required an NDA and should have been paid attention to by the public... but was not. Again, how is this double standard existing? How can he do what he did with her and then turn around and call her "horse face"? Do we really want someone like that in office? Yet, the public voted him in because they trusted him more than her. That was another situation that was within three degrees of me, maybe two... but I cannot recall if we personally met, so I heard the outcomes it had for her that was not in the media beyond just threats to her daughter. Within the trade, no one seems to ever mention any reason to not believe the woman, and there is always plenty of gossip going around, but she has a good reputation and even won her case against the lawyer for stealing from her. This man also happened to represent other friends of mine, and unfortunately... there is a major lack of attorneys to choose from particularly after the wiki scandal where the previously top attorney of the industry was involved. There is also something to be said for the fact that between Trump and this woman, only one of them really had the power to "take the other out" either of this world or have their career ruined. She literally did not stand a chance which is why more people should have considered that the only reason she was even coming out was for the public good, especially since there is nothing for her to really be gained from millions thinking she had slept with him. I am pretty sure that would be an automatic turn off to a large portion of her fan base. Now here we are years later dealing with the whole Mar-a-Lago fiasco and some of the student loan issues could have been dealt with faster had a different candidate been voted in. The whole thing could have been avoided. I am not saying that everyone from the trade is an angel, but certainly having a few good ones in politics could help set things on the correct path.

I am sure it was just joking, but we do not know who might come across these threads and if a person does not see all the messages, misses the first few posts (which I did and had to look back because a red flag went up internally), or does not know anything about the posters... it's important to know that someone's chances at political office are not totally destroyed by their history or ties to the trade. Seeing someone who has already "been there done that" can be a life line for another who has had to participate in the trade for one reason or another. It's important to note that there are role models out there for people in the trade and hope for a better future.

If some people didn't have double standards, they wouldn't have any standards at all.
