Here's a quick reference: "In American English, "chili" is the most common spelling for the spicy peppers as well as the stew and hotdog topping. In British English the preferred spelling is "chilli." In Spanish speaking countries and regions of the US, "chile" is the most common variant."

So - In English, I'll say "chili." Con su permiso, en español diré "chile."

And Chili Queens are a Texas institution - so in that instance I'll spell it the Texas way. Texans aren't always wrong, by definition ... are they? :)

I'm still hesitant to write "Chile." Yes, I know, as a country, it's Canada's second largest trading partner - and that's fine.
But Augusto Pinochet and my landlord both came from there. Can't say I like either.

Texas - like Quebec with longhorn cattle --- and oil wells. Don't forget them!

    Chili: Delicious in many varieties.
Chile: Home of a CIA-backed military coup to overthrow the democratically elected government.
Chilly: I have no idea. I'm in Phoenix, and it's 111 degrees outside.

CBC's This Hour Has 22 Minutes ran a very funny piece years ago. Alberta and Quebec go for marriage counseling. It's on YouTube.

Yeah - with their new, Draconian plans re: abortion and other matters, I could get behind that idea. The one Texas plan I read here at DI - I think in the Roe vs, Wade thread - was to bring criminal proceedings against anyone who leaves the State of Texas to seek an abortion in another jurisdiction, where it is legal. THOSE people have plainly lost the tinfoil lining in their ten-gallon hats! That's bat-sh*! territory! But y'can't tell 'em. They'll git th' rope.

I lived in Texas for 4 years. Two observations:
    • The "Don't Mess With Texas" campaign was about littering. But, of course, it warped into something aggressive.
    • The local brew, Lone Star Beer, calls itself the national beer of Texas. That ought to tell you a lot.
How many Texas Aggies (A&M grads) does it take to eat an armadillo? Two. One eats while the other watches for traffic.

I've lived all over New Mexico border country for 30 years and most of the time, the border was with Texas. My overall experience was with the Panhandle, South Plains, Permian Basin and Trans Pecos. Texas is HUGE and TEXANS are proud of their state. Texans aren't all alt-Right wackos. As a state population, they do tend Evangelical and they do have a long unpleasant history of white supremacy but there is incredible diversity.

My most memorable experience living in Texas was the Cockroaches. They were so big they could swallow a bus. (Slight exaggeration to demonstrate Texas humor)

Um...not sure you are exaggerating...a VW bus maybe...

I would probably live in El Paso if I didn't live here.

The place where sweet young virgins are deflowered? You walk down the street knee-deep in tacos? Ta-ta-ta-tacos? God and Lone Star beer are the things you trust?

El Paso isn't like the rest of Texas and Texans will be first to tell you so. Emphatically! :)

How is the resident graduate from the L.I.AR doing nowadays?

There are no graduates of L.I.A.R. here, and there never were. Fewer than 25 diplomas were ever sold from this obvious novelty a very long time ago. Who did you have in mind?

Long time passed since then and I though that Dr Bear had one of those for his book but I can be wrong.
