I drove by it for 20 years, always expecting it to say, "Surrender Dorothy" in the sky above.

Liberals especially progressives oppose may of the conservative values and world view, and vise versa.
So if there is a stream or ideas or interpretations in a faith that are against what Liberal views they are at odds and on different levels of resistance and conflict.
Abortion, pro-life is one such conflict.
But I'm positive that if one walks in to a church there will be a good % of the members or attendees who are liberal.
Its many time in interpretation of the scripture, and many christian denominations preach
love and tolerance but of-coarse there also broad spectrum and some are less tolerant.

The Gospels do not necessarily lead one to any particular political philosophy. However, my interpretation of the Gospels and the Catechism doesn't appear to be compatible with what passes for "Conservative" nowadays. This doesn't mean that Conservatives can't be Christians (which would be untrue on factual basis) - people are capable of holding contradictory beliefs.

It's not a given that government will be successful. It's a given "the free market, non profit organizations and social support networks" alone will fail. Because all people sin and fall short of the glory of God, and also - all human history.

From my experience - you might be right . Something we liberals need to look into, as a community.

One can walk and chew gum at the same time. Also, if the government is of the people by the people, advancing one's political positions (by voting, running for office, organizing, promoting ideas - and, yes, petitioning the government) is one of the ways of taking care of your community.

Yes. This kind of attitude is one of the traits of fascism. I can look up and quote the Umberto Eco essay if you want. Modern example is Russia, where this is a prevailing attitude and which is now a full-on Fascist state.

    Yeppers. Umberto Eco explains it.

Someone did paint it on an overpass nearby, though!

If humans cannot govern themselves because all people sin and fall short of the glory of God, then the solution would not seem to be a government comprised of those very same humans who all sin and fall short of the glory of God.

If anything, with that argument one should prefer a system that takes human failings into account rather than hand-waives them away, and that means most decisions being made by markets rather than by politics.

  9. What an overgeneralization! There are literally millions of liberal Christians - - United Church of Christ, National Association of Congregational Christian Churches, Disciples of Christ, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, The Episcopal Church USA, American Baptists, et. al.

So, Jesus is on pay-per-view? Good to know.

Was there a little man behind a curtain?

There is such a system. Called checks and balances. It could be improved, I guess, but not by punning Elon Musk's twitter account in charge.

The serious answer to your question is yes and no. No, there are no services being performed while the general public is permitted inside. Yes, the marriage sealing ceremony involves the man on one side of the curtain inviting his wife to cross the barrier. This represents that the man is in charge and must invite his wife to join him after death on a good high level planet where they will spend eternal bliss. So the wife can only advance to the best planet that her husband can get assigned to. So, if she dies first she has to wait around on a less ideal planet until he passes away. In the Mormon church only men can hold the priesthood and talk to god.

I was just taking the opportunity to take a cheap shot at the Mormon church. The sexist position of Mormon teachings regarding women always bothered me.

As stated, I know very little about LDS. I have observed for years, it's always pretty much open season on bashing the Mormon Church here on Degreeinfo.com

    Me, too.

Oh, I suspect that's not particularly unique to this board. As far as old-man-in-the-sky-who-intervenes-directly-in-your-life myths go, it's got a lot of, um, features to discuss.

While their specific religious tenets are not my cup of tea, if one judges a religion at least in part by the society of people who comprise it, then from the Mormons I've known many of those features are very positive. After all, it's not every segment of today's society that has so many strong families that actually do things together.

All very true, from personal experience though I'd say that the folks with the best features are ex-Mormons. Or maybe that is just my family? :p:Do_O
