Marymount California University, an approximately 54-year-old private religious campus in Rancho Palos Verdes, will permanently close later this year, officials announced on Friday afternoon, April 22. The university’s Board of Trustees made the decision this week after years of financial struggles, declining enrollment, rising costs and the coronavirus pandemic, according to Friday’s announcement. The board had discussed funding options to keep the small liberal arts university running since 2019, Marymount spokeswoman Cindy Monticue said via email Friday, but the trustees ultimately found the alternatives and their timelines weren’t feasible. Apparently there are 6 schools (5, now) with Marymount in the name: Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles, California Marymount California University, California Marymount College (Kansas), Salina, Kansas Marymount College, Tarrytown, New York Marymount Manhattan College, Manhattan, New York Marymount University, Arlington, Virginia There was a third Marymount College in Boca Raton, FL but it was renamed Lynn University in 1974.
