How to stall a job offer?

So, the Search Chair did not respond to my email. Yet, she wanted me to send my personal details ASAP to book my airline ticket. I definitely wouldn't want someone like her to be my supervisor.

Everyone is different but whenever I get a rejection email, I always respond to the person except it came from a no-reply email/HR system.

Funny how they all came through, even Invisible Boy, who could only become invisible if no one was looking at him!

I have a phone interview Wednesday (Texas state university), TT position.

I have a Zoom interview next week (private university on the East Coast), TT position.

I have a video demonstration due to a search committee by next week. I interviewed over a week ago and was advanced in the process. Another TT position at a southern private college.

Keep me in your prayers :)

What would you think about a position that was posted for a Fall 2021 start, reposted for a Spring 2022 start, and now posted for a Fall 2022 start? I am curious as to why they haven't found a suitable candidate. Do you think this is an appropriate question to raise during an interview?

I think if you word it right, very appropriate. I always ask a variation of the question, "What's led to the opening being available?" Sometimes it's growth, sometimes it's a previous candidate wasn't a good fit or moved on. Sometimes (and I assume this is more true in the slow gears of academia) they're looking for a really specific set of skills and are willing to wait for the right candidate. Tact always, of course.

    HBCU - $42k lol

    2 full-time remote positions
    https://careers.centralstate.edu/postings/5976

I would apply if it was asynchronous. I could juggle 2 full-time gigs lol

They also have a TT paying - $44k
    https://careers.centralstate.edu/postings/5905

I feel so bad turning down a bunch of schools these past few days. I wish I didn't apply all over the place. At this point, I only want to work in or near Pennsylvania. The only exceptions are the RDU area, HTX area, and ATL area.

Schools I turned down since Friday:
    Initial Interview.
University of Dubuque (not sure the track)... IDK why I thought I'd live in IA.
UT - Rio Grande Valley (TT)
    Limestone University (TT)

    Campus Interview (2nd round).
Framingham State University (NTT, 2-year post-doc teaching fellowship). IDK why I applied...

My top school (anonymous for now :D) interviewed me (TT). Another school I have at #5 (TT) scheduled an interview for later this month. A university is bringing me on campus for an interview (all-day activity, meeting w/President, Provost, Dean, VP Mission -Catholic) later this month.

    Chris,

How much time have you spent in ATL?

I've been there on several short trips lasting a few days each time.

I enjoy ATL for business trips and occasionally enjoy a long weekend mini-vacation there. Everyone has different interests and preferences, but it’d top my list for cities to avoid like the plague as a place to live and work on a daily basis.

I had my first campus visit last week in Massachusetts. I think it went well, but I will see if I get an offer. Either way, I am skeptical about the snowfall in that area. This is an NTT professor of practice position. I have my second campus visit this weekend in Alabama (TT). My top school (Philly area) emailed me last week to let me know I am moving forward (Campus visit, which may be on Zoom). Again, this is a TT position. Apart from that, I interviewed for a TT at an R2 HBCU, and they want me to meet with the students this Tuesday on Zoom. I have five interviews between Monday and Wednesday (4 Zoom and 1 phone). Two are TT, two are NTT, and one IDK the track.

My next update: I will share the position I have accepted (whenever that is). I will not take any position or the first position. I will accept the best position for myself because I will not move again.

Got my first recommendation for hire. HBCU, R2, tenure-track. It's number 3 on my list of 8 schools. Will share if I accept or consider other options.

I have gotten to experience how slow academic hiring can be. I was verbally offered a TT position on February 22nd, and I still haven't received a written offer as yet. The most recent communication was an email from the employment manager saying she is working on my contract and will send it once approved. This was 3/16/22, the same day I got an email from the background screening company to complete some forms. Between February 22nd and last Thursday, I did several virtual interviews, a two-day virtual "campus visit," and turned down several interview requests. I have schools reaching out about applications I submitted in January. Like, be honest. You're going to lose out on good candidates.

So, now while I wait for the first offer in writing, I may receive another before they come through. However, I am wondering if it is the will of God. He may have deliberately delayed the first offer since He knows the most recent campus visit I had is for the position that's been #1 on my list. Last week, the search committee chair emailed me to say they are waiting to hear back from the administration but that the committee is enthusiastic about my candidacy. I don't want to get ahead of myself, but an offer might be on the way. I received this email almost a week after my virtual campus visit to update me, tell me they are enthusiastic and provide a video tour of the campus.

I just wanna be over with this job search already :D

I applied for a full-time business professorship at a local community college. I applied in March 2021. They called requesting an interview in June 2021. By that time, I decided to stay in industry and turned down the interview request. If it is going to take 3 months for someone to decide to interview me, then it is obvious they are not all that interested in my opinion.

It doesn't necessarily mean they aren't interested. A lot of things can stall the process, including:
    -low number of suitable applicants
-coordinating the varying schedules of the Committee members
    -holiday breaks
-administrative issues, including funding and decision about whether to fill the position

I had a school email me last month to tell me the TT position was changed to a part-time position. I told them thanks but no thanks. I applied in October 2021.

So, I got an offer from my #1 school (a small Baptist university). It was my # because of its location and not its mission/Christian identity. I loved the restorative justice focus of the CJ program, though. Anyway, I had to make the very tough decision to decline the offer even before negotiating the salary. The Dean sent me the benefits summary and the faculty handbook. I discovered that I could be terminated for moral turpitude... ouch! Haha

Excerpt from Termination of Tenure and Employment:

"Conduct detrimental to the well-being of the University: including but not limited to sexual harassment, moral turpitude (such as fornication, adultery, homosexual conduct, dishonesty, theft, slander, or conviction on a felony or drug charge)."

    The search continues...

Sorry to hear. It's a tough decision but if it costs them enough good candidates maybe they'll reconsider in the future.

Thank you. Maybe they will change. I know they now allow LGBTQ+ students, though the student handbook still talks about sex between a man and a woman. So, those advocates view this as contradictory. Both the president and provost raised the topic of LGBTQ+ individuals serving as faculty/staff. In fact, the president addressed this topic when responding to my question about the greatest challenge facing the university currently. He said they have been praying to understand Christ's guidance for the school. Particularly, he said they were debating whether LGBTQ+ people could serve as long as they are in good standing with their church. However, he said on one end, they may lose funding (conservative supporters), and on the other, they would lose funding (liberal supporters).

For certain, they're in good standing with their God. That should be sufficient! Congratulations on your decision, Chris. These people obviously suck.
