I had a friend call me earlier today, she quit her job over this mandate and is getting ready for other jobs in different "non healthcare" and non customer/people facing fields... Not sure anyone on the board is affected... I am not affected. About half of the country is affected, the listed states are in the article at the bottom.

Affected professions and such... Link: COVID-19 vaccination mandates in the United States - Wikipedia

My healthcare-related job is permanently 100% remote, but if I didn't get vaccinated I would have been fired. I think that's juuuuuuuuuuuiuust a bit too far.

Well, if you're not part of Team Overreaction, that must mean you're on Team Underreaction, and we wouldn't want that.

Lest anyone say I'm making that up, there was an interesting show about this yesterday on NPR, with two New York Times guys talking about different segments of the populations and their reactions to COVID:

Vaccinations, masks, social distancing. It all comes down to whether you care for yourself only or whether you care about everyone, because you wear and do those things for other people, not just for yourself.

I'm OK with it. If you (or anyone else) didn't get vaccinated, you could be dead - or cause someone else's death. I can see employers not wanting people who'd do this - remotely or on their premises.

One of the most illuminating, yet wretched aspects of COVID is the horror-show of so many people who have more regard for their so-called 'individual rights' than their own lives or those of others. I thought at first COVID would be a common enemy that would unite, rather than turn people against each other. I was dead wrong.

I don't think anyone could have anticipated that a major political party would turn people against it--or that they could. But that party tapped into a strong American sentiment called, "You aren't the boss of me." Then, they told these people what they wanted to hear and believe anyway, and then told them they didn't have to. So, like little kids refusing to eat their peas, we have this, about a quarter of the adult population dead-set against a notion--vaccination against a communicable disease--they'd otherwise enthusiastically supported.

    Emphasis on "dead."

Especially given these comments, I'd really be interested in people's reaction to the New York Times guys. There's a transcript available for people who'd rather read than listen.

Indeed. Just as childish, but so much more deadly.

I am reminded, though, that we can't blame other nations' vaccination refuseniks on U.S. political events. It's a sizeable problem in Europe, for instance. Saw footage of a demonstration in Paris the other day. Big sign - Hitler, in full uniform, urging people (in French) to "Obey! Get vaccinated!" A friend in Germany recently told me about anti-vaxxer activity there. A well-known German anti-vaxxer - a politician, just died of COVID. Death is never good news, but perhaps this man's end will at least make some of his erstwhile followers re-think their position. I hope so.

Correction: We certainly CAN, if it's a copycat thing -- which it may well be. Sorry.

Although, in the words of Obi-Wan Kenobi, "Who’s more foolish, the fool or the fool who follows him?"

Definitely. It's not just an American issue. You have thousands of German-speaking vaccine denialists fleeing to build a "paradise community" in Paraguay. ;) But it looks like the local government is now requiring vaccination certificates.

Hmm, Germans in Paraguay, where have heard of that before?

Yeah. I'm not so sure I want to see these kids get back together. I know I didn't like their previous work....

It's a gruesome object lesson in reality vs. ideology. Here in New Mexico, 72 % vaccinated overall, over 82% of hospitalizations and over 80% of deaths from Covid Omicron are unvaccinated. Who was it that said, "Facts are stubborn things"? John Adams?
