That's VERY lucky; as far as I know, Canada has even bigger problem with residency spots shortage that US has. The whole "MD driving taxis" trope has truth to it.

And the "foreign-trained MD driving taxis" trope has lots of truth. I know of a (female) licensed doctor, who is now practising in Canada - just not in my province (Ontario). This lady is African-trained (in her country of birth) and practised medicine successfully in Finland, prior to coming here. She had to fight her way through medical association opposition here, to write the exam to be admitted to practice in her province. They didn't want to tell her when and where the exam would be held! She found out anyway, registered and succeeded.

The things foreign-trained professionals have to go through...

I don't think this is an exaggeration, for anyone else wondering.

The MCCQE (Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination) is made up of 2 parts. It looks like the MCCQE Part II, the practical skills demonstration, has been replaced with the NAC (National Assessment Collaboration) Exam. Nowadays they list an approximate time when the application will open (for example, the next one is sometime in May 2022), but basically if you're not sitting there refreshing the screen you'll miss your opportunity to register and must wait another year to do so. That's just one of many hoops you need to jump through to validate that your training is equivalent to a Canadian's - for the privilege of starting your training over as a first year resident. It boggles the mind.

Right, it wasn't. Or at least, I don't think it was. I got it from a known good (National) source and I could probably find it again, if needed. I think it was maybe 5-7 years ago. And thanks for believing me. I know it's difficult, sometimes.

Totally true. Right where I live. It's AWFUL. And The Ford administration is directly responsible. From Doug Ford himself:

"We’ve started to see an alarming number of new hospital admissions now with triple-digit admissions every single day,” said Ontario Premier Doug Ford. “If we don’t do everything possible to get this under control, the results could be catastrophic.”

Yesterday, the same Doug Ford re-opened schools amid drastically rising cases. Likely because this is an election year and he thinks many of his crowd would welcome this (and it's very possible they would.) Shut down surgeries and open the disease vectors (schools) full-blast. Brilliant!

There are plenty of people here (including myself) who don't like how Ford has led(?) in the pandemic. I'm hoping we get a new Premier on election day. And a new Education Minister. And a new Top Doctor...

No - that was his now-deceased brother, Rob Ford, dogged by the infamous crack-smoking video. Rob was mayor of Toronto. He and brother Doug both started in politics as Toronto City Councillors. Doug's only known connection with drugs appears to be that he's said to have been selling them, when he was much younger. Reported in the Globe and Mail, a major daily newspaper. Here: https://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/toronto/globe-investigation-the-ford-familys-history-with-drug-dealing/article12153014/

Sorry - de mortuis nil nisi bonum and all that - but I can't find a good word to say - in ANY language I know - about either brother.:(

Besides, as we Americans are quick to point out, Canadians are always polite and courteous! Right?;)

BTW...more maybe than most United Statesians, I try to keep up with Canadian news. Heck I even occasionally read the Times-Colonist! (Great name for a Canadian paper). But how did Justin T. manage to win a THIRD General Election? Haven't you folks gotten tired of him yet?

The Conservatives haven't put up a compelling candidate since Stephen Harper. The NDP haven't since Jack Layton (RIP). I didn't like Harper, but the last few Conservative leaders have been trying to play the culture wars in Canada and that recipe doesn't go down as smooth as it does in the US. Then you have the vote splitting caused by the People's Party of Canada and Maxime Bernier's shenanigans.

On the NDP side, Mulcair was completely ineffective. I haven't been around much for Jagmeet Singh's leadership (living in the US now), but he's had his fair share of scandals. It's not so much that the Liberals are the best option, they're just the least worst.

    I miss Jack Layton.

Hunh! I wasn't aware Singh had any scandals (besides wearing a turban and beard I mean.)

Interesting! Of all the Canadian papers, why that one? I ask because my fiancée is from Victoria and we plan to move there once her youngest graduates high school in a few years.

    • A few days ago he had to apologize because his wife recently accepted a $1700 rocking chair as a "gift" in exchange for posting about it on her Instagram. Fine for mere mortals, but an ethics violation for the family member of a sitting MP (much less a leader.
    • He broke public health rules in May 2021
    • He was ejected from the House of Commons for calling another MP racist, violating the strongly enforced parliamentry "decency." in June 2020
Less scandalous than many, but still a few headlines there.

I read the Times Colonist occasionally because I was born raised and educated in (and on) Puget Sound. I've made many visits to Victoria and other parts of Western Canada including several after I moved to New Mexico. I even own a Canucks jersey!

    I don't, however, hold a Nexus card.

Some (including myself) also perceive him as somewhat sympathetic to Sikh terrorism. That's enough for me. I like Sikhs in general, and I'd have no problem with a guy in a turban as PM. But not THAT guy.

I'd much rather see a different Sikh in that job - my first cardiologist, now practising in another city. She's one of the most life-affirming, inclusive and humanity-loving people I've ever had the privilege of meeting. Yeah - Dr. C. for PM! :)

    (1) He bought it. That's how he won. Plain and simple. See below.

    (2) How can we get tired of him? (Old people like me, that is.) We can't get tired of the MONEY. It keeps coming. $500 untaxed freebie early in the pandemic, and another $500 freebie a few months ago - that one just prior to the election and only for those 75 and up. The second one was accompanied by news that the basic Old Age pension was being raised by 10% next July.

We simply can't afford to vote for anyone else. Golden handcuffs. Plus, as Dustin pointed out - no other even remotely viable candidate.

I was really entertained by the buzz of Kevin O'Leary for Prime Minister. That was a short, fun ride.

I have a lot of fun watching the French-language Conservative leadership debates. I'm intermediate in French at best, but I do have a deep respect for the role that Quebec and French play in Canada and if I woke up as Prime Minister my policies wouldn't be actively antagonistic to Quebec like Conservative platforms can be.
