...and like I said, I'm not listening!
Very interesting! From my experience as a learner, I would rather have experts in the field teaching me the subject than experts in the theories of education stumbling through the material. For example, I felt the VUL DHA had great teachers that had little experience in healthcare administration. My feeling is the OSU online Ed.D. attracts well seasoned experts in the aerospace industry not K through 12 educators. So once again, it comes down to an accurate labeling of the degree. My guess is this particular school was able to convince the college of education it falls under an Ed.D. It what it is and I am not going to lose any sleep over it.

There are education programs that focus on higher education, adult learning, and corporate training. I'd expect educators to be teaching in an education program. I do agree that professors in an applied program, such as a DHA, should have some professional experience in the field. It is my understanding that VUL's DHA is more of a general leadership program than a healthcare administration program. They should look into hiring professors with doctoral degrees in a field related to healthcare or a business degree plus healthcare experience.

The OSU Ed.D av and space is very focused STEM field with enrollees holding degrees in engeering, military or civilian aviator backgrounds. I doubt a lawyer from New Mexico that lives by a launchpad would not not do well if that is their only experience.

VUL is oriented towards healthcare administration and is not “general business” but the course instructors are but learning.

I know that it is not general business, but in certain fields, doctoral degrees are uncommon. Therefore, universities have to hire individuals with related degrees who have either conducted research or have professional experience in the sub-field. In the safety field, for example, most professors will not have a doctoral degree in safety. Those degrees are hard to find.

So if I were to give the Doctor of Healthcare Administration a primary focus then yes, I would say I hold a DHA with a focus in Leadership! Did that answer your question? At the risk of completely derailing this thread about OSU's Ed.D., my professors at VUL held Ph.D.'s in Business and one I believe in public policy, a DBA, an Ed.D., etc. However, the background in healthcare administration would have been more valuable to me than the specific doctorate. I suspect in aviation and space education, that frame of reference oriented towards this highly specialized area would also be more important than which doctorate the professor holds from a student's perspective. From the Professor's to University's political circle perspective, apparently a completely different priority.
