Athabasca University and Quantic School of Business and Technology do not signify delivery instruction methods in their name. Also, Quantic used to be Smartly, which was not a smart name, so they changed it. There is nothing wrong with schools strictly online such as Excelsior College, Charter Oaks State College, Thomas Edison State University (formerly college).

First of all, I love the people of the Lakota Nation. They honor their Chief Sitting Bull by naming a college after him like the white man honors their first chief of this nation. Perhaps I shouldn't want a degree from George Washington University? Ignorance plays a large role in racism!

Thanks for the background information. I didn't know that Sitting Bull was a name of a person. Either way, that's a funny name. I have no problem with a school honoring anyone. I personally don't like the name of the school.

I think many Americans would immediately recognize Sitting Bull as a Native American name.

You would think so but I am amazed at how many people don't realize the lion's share of States in the USA have Native American names!

And there are many Americans who are immigrants who did not spend their formative years or even adolescence years in the U.S.

I'm talking about respecting cultures, not me! Names in the Native American culture have great meaning and are oftentimes sacred. They deserve respect and dignity, not ridicule!

Sadly, I'm beginning to understand why there is so much racism in the world. Ignorance is astounding and the need for cultural awareness is crucial!

Guys, I know we let things fly fast and loose in the political discussions part of the forum, but this isn't there.

Agree. It's definitely not an excuse to make fun of people's culture after you've been educated. Instead of continuing to make fun of their names, he could have educated himself on the original inhabitants of the nation he lives in. It's shocking to see this type of behavior from a Black Caribbean whose ancestors were forced to adopt European culture and language.

I agree that making fun of Native Americans is inappropriate in an EDUCATION sub-forum.

I don't know. All he said was he thought it was a silly name for a university. He is allowed to have an opinion. It isn't like he was insulting Sitting Bull or Natives, just the use of that name for a school. I think Trump University was a stupid name for a university. Do I need to back up and be respectful of rich white people? Or is there something about Native Americans that requires MORE respect than others? And what about the disrespect toward him by assuming he knows or should know American/Native history?

The behavior was expressing the opinion that he "wouldn’t want a degree from Sitting Bull College."

There are a lot of schools whose names I don't like which isn't a comment on their namesake and I don't understand why the two are being conflated in this one case.
