In the Canadian Forces. When you join, between your oath and going to training you are a a member of the military but not paid.

Then if you get yourself in trouble enough to get military detention, you are not paid while doing your time.

Question though...can a US soldier who is no longer being paid refuse to obey orders or just walk away due to a breach of contract? If not, there's the big difference between the private sector and the military.

No. If you're in a pay status, you'll be paid.

Also, there is no situation where one is in active service (active duty or Reserve/Guard) and is not being paid. Payments can be delayed for logistical or financial reasons--really, really rare. But you're still being paid.

Inactive reservists are not paid, but they don't have any military responsibilities, either. They're not subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice, either. But they're subject to being recalled to active duty. Almost all initial enlistment/commissioning contracts have a period of inactive reserve tacked onto the end. It's nearly meaningless, but the country could call these people back to service in a national emergency.

Yes, there is. Employment contracts are nearly unenforceable. And even if an employer would try to enforce one, it is a civil matter, not a criminal one. Violate your contract as a military member and you could face criminal proceedings.

Never met one but I think for the U.S. Space Force Veterans I am going to say, "Live long and prosper."
