Well, dang it's not THAT serious. It's just a matter of taste.

I think the wreath could be better done. It would look more balanced if it was much smaller.

    Sorry to disappoint you. :emoji_head_bandage:

I'm hoping for a deal on the MA in Applied Linguistics, although that's a different department.

Profound ignorance is thinking that the memorization and recall of specific facts unrelated to one's field of study is an appropriate measure of learning in a degree program.

You are joking right? For the western world, a passing knowledge of Greek culture, arts etc. Is a fundamental part of an educational foundation. I would argue it goes to the very heart of higher education.

Regardless of ones field of study.

Maybe somewhere like St. John's College, but expecting everyone involved with higher education to necessarily recall the cultural significance of laurel wreaths does seem a bit exacting.

I'm not so sure I agree in this case. Olympics, higher education, art, fashion, authority in civil and military spheres, these are all things that the laurel wreath have been used in, to this day in many cases. Heck, recently the darn proud boys have high jacked it.

It's truly a symbol with millenniums of use.

Haha I never thought posting a picture of a diploma would cause so much controversy!

Yeah - from a design perspective, I do think the incorporation of the laurel could be better - I meant more from the standpoint of not understanding the significance of it and it's meaning.

I agree with this - it's like claiming that you didn't realize the cross was a symbol for Christianity, or that Nazi's had highjacked the swastika - one doesn't need to have studied Greek history to understand the use of the laurels - it's a symbol that has been used for thousands of years and is still in current widespread use. It's hard to imagine anyone not understanding it's application. It doesn't seem like esoteric knowledge to me, but I guess it is.

You are not alone! I was also shocked when someone said ''leaves'' and they were unable to recognize the symbol. It cracked me up

The Eurocentrism is strong; I bet most of you are ignorant of the history of minority groups within your own country. Knowing about the laurel wreath isn't even important when it comes to understanding ancient Greece's contributions to western civilization. The last time I learned about Greek mythology was in a 9th grade English class. I have a degree in almost everything, and the laurel wreath was not mentioned in one course.

What's ignorant is insulting a Caribbean man's education just because he doesn't know about some ancient European symbol that has little importance to understanding western civilization and no importance in his profession. The western hemisphere was built on the backs of his ancestors. How much do you know about Afro-Caribbeans, Afro-Latinos, African Americans, or the histories and cultures of our ancestors in West and Central Africa? Do you know all the ancient symbols of the indigenous tribes of the Americas, the first inhabitants of these lands?

I'm pretty sure he was the one that said their diplomas looked "unprofessional" because it had "a flower" or something on it. That sounds like an ignorant criticism to me, and it surprised me. If an Malian based university had a mudcloth design on their diplomas, I doubt that I would have said that the diploma looks "unprofessional" because it has "zigzags" on it.

The design is ugly, in my opinion. It looks like they used clip art.

Having lived in the Carib for 5 years, (Caymans), allow me to assure you that laurel wreaths are used in symbols there as well..of course brought by western (read white and Spanish) to the islands.

I didn't say that I had never heard of a laurel wreath, which I have. All those years in school, and you didn't become fluent in English? I would think that's more important.

This is without question the dumbest argument I've ever seen on Degreeinfo.

Quick reminder that personal attacks are against the TOS.

Even if the attacks are incomprehensible pedanticism over who does or does not know a single piece of useless trivia.
