Being embarrassed of where you graduated or attended

I have a certificate from the Marine Corps Institute (MCI) corresponding program; nobody knows if the school exists. The school was accredited by DEAC (formerly DETC) and was dissolved into the Marine Corps University (MCU)'s distance learning division with regional accreditation. My signature is "Marine Corps University" instead of Marine Corps Institute. I used Thomas Edison State University (formerly College) for military and CLEP credit banks; I never disclosed I attended there. Which was true; I did not take any classes.

 

I dunno, Rich, I just don't hate it. Now, if it were saaaaay, GOUCHER Institute & University, well, then I'd be disturbed, lol.

 

I completed Marine Command and Staff College by correspondence a very long time ago. I wonder if that's worth any credit anywhere?

 

I am not sure about the courses, but I had it as a Certificate. There are a bunch of credits in the SMART transcripts. You can request it at https://jst.doded.mil/jst/

 

Yeah I had enough credits to get an AAS from the Community College of the Air Force, but I never pursued it. Which hindsight 20/20 was a mistake, but my mind was on transitioning and not staying in, so I didn't see the cost v. benefit; even though there was really no cost. Oh to be young, motivated, but ultimately short sighted . . .

 

Oh, I don't know. I have one from CCAF it has never, ever mattered. Not once.

 

Not for professional use. I had a love/ hate relationship with the USAF by the time I was getting out. Too many deployments, ROI were getting annoying, I was getting burnt out. But as I get older I'm getting more nostalgic.

 

It's why my son left after 9 years. In that time, he deployed 4 times for significant periods of time, twice to a hot combat zone. Once he completed his master's (studying homeland security) online at Penn State, he transferred to the Air Guard and is now an FBI analyst. Oh, and he has a never-used CCAF degree, too.

In my day (I retired from active duty in 1996), we never deployed. Back then, the neocons hadn't grabbed hold to invade every country they could. We were totally focused on the Cold War and deterrence. We were two-thirds of the nuclear triad and we took that very seriously.

 

I deactivated my Facebook after watching the documentary "The Social Dilemma" (terrible name, great documentary.) I keep my Twitter but only to reserve my name and because Twitter makes it very difficult to browse their site without being logged in. I have an account on Quora, I don't know that I consider that social media or not. Other than that, no Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, etc. I find that even Reddit makes me frustrated so I try to limit my time. But I wish there was a news service that included the big newsmaking events without the smaller more salacious ones.

For example, it's helpful to know there was a mass shooting in X location. It's less helpful to hear about a single instance of police corruption. That article should be written and many people should read it, but me reading about one more instance of police corruption does nothing to improve my understanding of the world and simultaneously a lot to upset me for 15 minutes.

Of course, any individual touchy issue that upsets me, is not likely to upset everyone -we all have our sore spots. So this fictional news service bubble is not likely to have an audience.

 

I have seen your posts on Quora. You seem to be very active there.

I really respect all of you who are showing your real names / identities. Very hard for me to use my own name because the posts then become a lot more personal. In fact, this is my 3rd or 4th account on degreeinfo since the early days lol.

On the other hand, I do suggest that some posters try to limit the info they provide. For example, TeacherBelgium (he/she) had posts on reddit that I would say are extremely NSFW and can potentially ruin his/her career if it got out.

 

This, I like. I just signed up and looked at today's digest, it's exactly the sort of thing I was looking for.

 

I've found Reddit to have a lot of hate and hostility in recent years. And tons of trolls. They got rid of RedditGifts now, and that was one of their greatest tools where humans could connect and show kindness.

I leave FB, Reddit, Instagram, etc. accounts in existence to reserve the username and also to keep in rare contact with people from my past who wouldn't have my current contact info.

 

I don't hide my schools but it is a bit weird to say that I studied at at a top ten graduate school in Public Health and then to do a follow up MBA at Columbia Southern University. I have no real issues with my time there but if I could go back and redo probably would have opted for LSU Shreveport instead for bettername recognition (and better program). I'm however very excited to be finishing up my DHA in December at Virginia University of Lynchburg. Trident remains on my LinkedIn profile but not my resume.

 

Don't say anything. Your credentials will speak for themselves.

I did my PhD at a school NO ONE has ever heard of, even residents of Cincinnati, where it's located. I subsequently did another doctorate at a top 200 (in the world) uni. No one cares. I'm a consultant in private practice, where credentials mean a lot, and no one cares.

List what matters, ignore the rest. Be honest, and that doesn't mean you have to be complete.

 

Well my degree is a 5 year FT - called Specialist Degree, from a country that no longer exists. Soviet Union and today disputed Transdnistr. Today called - Taras Shevchenko State University of Tiraspol, and early name State Pedagogical Institute - Приднестровский государственный университет имени Т. Г. Шевченко.
Evaluated in the US as Masters degree equivalent. My cities university Chernivtsi didn't accept me, so since my dad was from Romania and after WW2 Bessorabia with relatives all over Moldovia SSR I was accepted and studied there.
Unlike my friends who had top Ukrainian and Russian university credentials, my degree is from not that known university.
I felt over the years that I needed to earn a western anglophone supplemental credentials.
So I added graduate level degree and certificates from from MIT, NYU, and undergraduate level certificate from Harvard and others like the good old ICS UK that also expended my discipline.
Today with endless DL on line name recognized universities one can upgrade their education.
Sometimes its also psychological, one feels inferior degree but in reality its not important and others don't judge at all.

Exactly. Not to mention the media reports every instance of perceived corruption/brutality and doesn't mention the 10 million other yearly arrests and tens of millions of public contacts that do not result in a problem. That will definitely skew a person's perception on the prevalence of a problem. So you leave being upset by the individual incident AND not having any bigger context of the nationwide frequency of the issue in relation to the population.

 

Awarded university status in 2008, It remains an accredited institution of the University of Wales and offers both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, as well as professional courses.

I would ask if association with University of Wales is problematic?
