    Hi to everyone,

I am planning to pursue a DBA degree and therefore I am currently looking for suitable programs around the world. While doing some research I found the DBA from Grenoble in France, which seems to be a respected degree (triple accreditation, quite a few alumni in academic positions at various universities). Nevertheless, I found, on their homepage, a statement that their DBA degree is not recognized by the state:

Program Recognition: The Doctorate of Business Administration (DBA) degree from Grenoble Ecole de Management is recognized internationally for high academic standards, publication rates, and its AACSB and AMBA accreditation. As a part-time program aimed at experienced professionals, it does not correspond to a "Diplôme national de doctorat" delivered by the French government.

I thought that only state approved degrees are valid in Europe. Since I am not from Europe, nor a native French speaker (nor English) it was quite hard doing research for me. I found some statements that said that only public universities can deliver the title of Doctor in France.

Is there someone who has experience on this issue?

    Thank you and best regards,
    Boya

"it does not correspond to a "Diplôme national de doctorat" delivered by the French government."

The best answer would be from the institution itself. However, my understanding that the program studies and diplomas are issuing by the institution itself, which is accredited. It does not issue by the French Government or the government affiliation. If you are looking at French Doctorate, don't forget ESCP University's Global Executive Ph.D. in Business Administration. I think the price tag is the same, 76,0000 Euros.

I´m always surprised how much money some people are willing to invest in their academic education. Guess they have way higher professional goals than I do, so it might pay off for them. Also I´m from Germany where states schools are (almost) for free, that might influence my judgement.

This programm seems to award a kind of "Titulo propio", where the school itsself is state-recognized but this particular study program is not.

Since it´s not even 100 % online and very expensive personally I´d never ever apply for this program:

"3 years, part-time (with both online and on-site seminars, conferences, qualifying examinations and a final dissertation)"

    A typo, 76,000 Euros. 76,0000 is a Harvard-level price. :D

I pursue a higher degree only to enrich and satisfy myself. However, I do not have an issue with those applying for such expensive MBA/DBA programs.
I understand some students will value the opportunity to enlarge their personal network, even may find their spouse within the class. Everyone has their own choice.

Boya, which country/state are you from? It all depends, if you have good schools in your neck of the woods, take them locally or if there are any online options, take them first for local recognition. I wouldn't want to take a DBA in a country where they speak a different language, even with the "translation tools", the meaning might get mixed up. There are plenty of AACSB, ACBSP and other accredited schools globally. Tell us more of what you're looking for and a price range... we have recommendations for value/ROI.

Interesting question. Ultimately, what matters is utility. Does this degree get you what you want.

Accreditation in France is unlike anything elsewhere. There are many bodies that accredit aside from the government. Also, the Grandes Ecoles have a higher standard/reputation than the government accrediting agencies and they even formed an accrediting body separate from the government to accredit themselves (sounds funny but it isn't - that's how insane it is there).

I looked at their DBA website and the placement is impressive - far better than any online school or even top 50-100 school I've ever seen. Do you think Penn/Wharton, Penn State or UNC would hire someone who they think has a bogus doctorate? It's not like they were lacking in candidates and were desperate.

I am going to guess that the Diplome is only awarded to full-time students, hence the DBA not corresponding to it.

Few people in this forum have completed this program, I don't recall names but the few that have completed commented that the program still is not such an easy sell in the US mainly because it is foreign and it is DL. However, this might have changed. The best is to do a search and check the faculty jobs that people hold with this DBA, my guess is that it should score well for your average faculty job but it might not score so well for the elite research universities that still look for a 5 year residential PhD.

As an alternative, do consider DBAs from the UK ... I find the programmes at Durham and Aston as quite competitively priced.
