Hi Everyone. It's my first time on this site and I need some advice. I began working as soon as I graduated from my Undergrad at a school in the California UC system. After graduating, I began working full time and within a few months, I began my MBA. I just completed my MBA and I'm interested in a PhD (or EdD but Ph.D. is ideal) in Leadership which I would like to use in the workforce and in the world of academia as a professor. I have found a lot of interesting programs that are hybrid/online, however many of them require 5+ years of experience. I have 2+ years of work experience and want to find a program that can accommodate full-time work and will be useful in the business world while also being affordable. It's also important to me that the school has a good reputation and has a brick-and-mortar location. The two programs I have found so far that interest me are Indiana Tech's Global Leadership Ph.D. which has an MBA track that will allow me to skip 5 classes and save money and time. the drawback on this one is that I'm not sure what the reputation of the school is and there are no live classes or a cohort. The other program that interests me is University of the Pacific's EdD in Leadership and Innovation. I really like that this program meets monthly, has live classes, and the school is fairly well respected from my understanding. The drawback, in this case, is that it's an EdD, and I would prefer a Ph.D. I would love to hear your thoughts on either school and hear about if there are any other programs that may be a good fit for me and are under $65k.

    Thank You!

I forgot to mention, University of the Cumberlands is also on my radar, however I'm not crazy about the fact that it's 100% online with no immersions.

Marshall University has an Ed.D in Leadership Studies that only requires 45 credits, including a 9-credit dissertation, and costs ~$20k.

I don't know how well this degree would help you in the job market nor if it could land you a professor gig.

Might be helpful to share just a bit more. What type of business work are you in and what type of academic work are you considering, involved with, etc.

In terms of academic work, I'd like to teach Business or Leadership courses. I work in the Commercial Real Estate Industry which certainly does not require a doctoral degree so this is definitely something I am doing for personal fulfillment. Because of that, I want to find a program that is affordable yet reputable.

If you're in North America, nearly any doctorate is unlikely to help you with the former better than alternative uses of that money and time would be.

As for the latter, you're very unlikely to be competitive for a full time academic position without a doctorate from a top tier program. And if your goal is to teach as an adjunct, consider how grueling the competition for those positions are, and how low the pay usually is. You'd be better off working part time at Starbucks... and that doesn't require a five figure degree.

I'm not saying there aren't any use cases for part time doctorates, of course, just to be very careful not to underestimate their opportunity cost.
