Not drink for 2 months? Boris Yeltsin would never have allowed that! :)
Got to give them credit - drinking has declined 40% since the 90s. Russians are still pretty good at it, though. My own declined 100% around 2004-2005 and I've saved every penny.

The article was interesting - particularly the part about increased lifespan. That's a big jump in 15-20 years. They must be doing something right. Good for them.

Because of increased lifespan among other factors Russia raised the retirement age which made many Russians unhappy.
The law envisaging a gradual increase in the retirement age in Russia to 60 years for women and 65 years for man.

That would bring pension age to around where we were in Canada. The old age pension gateway is gradually going from 65-67 here. When it first came in many years ago, it was 70. There isn't a difference for men or women. Probably the earlier age for Russian women is because - in the past, by the time Dunyasha was 60, her husband, Ivan, would likely be dead from drink - ergo, she'd need a pension and survivor benefits to get by.

I think we old people in Canada get a helluva deal. I'm not complaining one bit. Real financial peace for the first time in my life - and more savings than I ever had before. I'm hoping this can go on till 140, at least! Russia, from what I hear - not as good to their old folks as here. I can remember seeing news in the 80s-90s. Inflation eroded Russian pensions and people were marching with signs "Bastards! Give us back our food and clothes!" Made me glad to be here.

Hey, I'm nearly 78 and I'm buying a Fender Telecaster! Could I do that, as an old-timer in Russia? Well, maybe - if I was a Party member.

Indeed a fine instrument, Lerner. Glad to hear it. These 15 players (and thousands of others) better look out! Lerner's in the house! He's got killer licks!
