    Page 1, second sentence:
    Did she proofread this thing?

Anyone who wants to pick apart someone else's dissertation should make their own available for public inspection.

Saw that - context clear - ignored it. A solitary typo:

    (1) is inconsequential and
    (2) a minor embarrassment
    (3) always appears in the worst places.

Jill Jacobs-Biden is none of the above.

As the TV Buddhist Monk might say: "Look beyond, in all things, Grasshopper."

    Did you?

I've found typos in both my doctoral dissertations. It's frustrating, after all the levels of review they go through. While I edited my first one, it went through several layers of review. I hired an editor for my second one. She took two passes through it--almost a year apart. I still found a typo.

    You know what? Who cares?

Asking for a proofread of the first page isn't too much to ask, surely. Perhaps academic standards are different in America, but that wouldn't fly where I am. Apologies for the assumption.

Though to be honest, I suspect the status of the individual concerned, and the heightened political sphere in the US, has far more to do with the reactions here, than any underlying principle.

For reference, it's worth considering how many critiques of poorly spelt websites have come from the same people, as those excusing the misspelling in said thesis.

I'll hold off on further comment until 22 January 2021.

I'm not a professor - just a former barstool prophet. Please don't take my approach as representing anything anywhere in the academic world.:)
Again - I am a person of no principles, scruples or even morals - underlying or otherwise. :)
True. Maybe it's because I'm in awe of anyone who writes a dissertation - because I've never written one. I'll forgive quite a lot. I can cobble together a website, though. Usually with fairly good spelling. So, those I can justifiably criticize. And I've read some AWFUL dissertations (not that many) which should NEVER have been accepted or published. This is NOT one of them, I can safely say.
Please hold it till Jan 25th. I want to enjoy my 78th birthday on the 24th. :)

I still think that TV Buddhist monk in teh 70s had something going for him. "Look beyond in all things."

Whoops - That's "the" 70s. Unlike Jill Jacobs-Biden, perhaps, you only get 10 minutes to fix stuff, here.

Anyway, how be we contrast it with Melania Trump's dissertation? .... Oh yes, that's right. There ISN'T one. She spent one year at University of Ljubljana and then dropped out....

Guess I know what your point is. Still, I feel entitled to tear Dr. Dinos dissertation to shreds, even if I don't even have a Bachelor...

If I may ask, where did you do your doctorate and write your dissertation?

It was on her website prior to the 2016 election. When it was questioned, the entry disappeared without comment from the Trumps.

I do not need a doctorate to tell that a dissertation (and especially the dissertation of Kent Hovind I mentioned) is full of elementary mistakes or to spot gross academic misconduct.
But let's agree to disagree here.

Actually, you do. But you don't know that for the exact same reason.

No. A person doesn't need a Doctorate to determine if something he/she reads is bullshit - or bad writing - even if the crap is masquerading as a dissertation. Dissertations are by no means the exclusive reading and critical preserve of those with doctorates. Who died and made it so?

Yes - only those in academia can award or deny a doctorate to the dissertation's writer. But the rest of us are free to pass judgment on one if we choose. Something to do with First Amendment, I'd think. My take: That Amendment gets considerable negation and abusive flak around here.

Actually, you don't know what I know. Actually, I have better past-times than arguing with you about this. Actually, I guess this is the right time to quote Sirach 8:3 and to quit this conversation.

I agree with you. I equally agree with Steve that if an individual is going to criticize someone's dissertation, they should make theirs available (assuming they've written one) for public inspection. That said, when I'm PhinisheD, I'll embargo my dissertation until I publish a few articles from it.
