What would you include in a 10-minute demo teaching presentation on the gun violence epidemic in your city? I'm thinking at least one slide will include current stats and comparison to the previous year, maybe another with the demographics of the victims... IDK. 10 minutes isn't long but I don't know what interesting things to include... HELP!!
Compare the death toll to the death toll of Switzerland (which has a very high amount of guns, too). Can be interesting...
Thanks. I don't know if they want me to focus on other cities.. here's the prompt: “the gun violence epidemic in 2020 City Name." They provided the name of the city.
Thanks. Here's the prompt: “the gun violence epidemic in 2020 City Name." They provided the name of the city. Maybe I could talk about policies to improve or maybe I could use one of the slides to compare the city with Chicago?!
For context, who's the audience? Are you teaching to undergrads for 10 minutes on this topic? I would include: 1) Current stats 2) Comparison to the previous year 3) Demographics of victims and offenders (this one I'm iffy on, is it relevant to the gun violence epidemic in that city? If it is, then include it. If shootings tend to be random violence versus group/gang violence among a particular identifiable age group, keep it in.) 4) Current Policy Implemented (if any) 5) Future Policy Suggestions 6) Discussion Questions and Implications (takeways, not necessarily for discussion now) In terms of current or future policy, for example: Some states found their homicide rates lowered when they required enhanced background checks (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4504296/) Some cities implement programs that involve trying to identify people at risk of violence early and offering them alternatives, like the South Bend Group Violence Intervention (SBGVI) Some cities also use acoustic gun violence detectors (ShotSpotter or similar), so that police respond to 100% of shootings instead of only the ones they get calls about, which in South Bend were less than 25% There are other municipal/local options too like requiring background checks at gun sales as a condition of getting permits to host those gun sales. This isn't my area though.
Awesome. Thanks for this. The audience will be a search committee. I created my PowerPoint yesterday and I included everything you mentioned, save for the demographics of the offender (unknown but could be inferred from the demographics of the victims - it's been consistently shown that most victims are killed by people of the same race). However, for the victim, I included age and gender as well. I also have a slide where I talk about how the problem can be addressed and what the city has been doing to address it. Yes, gun violence is an epidemic in the city that the school is located. I included a short 30 sec clip from a news report in August when the city recorded 30 shootings in one weekend. I think we're thinking alike because those are pretty much the areas I covered... 6 slides excluding the title, learning objective, summary, and reference slides. I'll also start with a fake recap of our previous class and end with an assignment on researching a gun violence reduction program that has been implemented in other cities and the outcomes.
