Marshall University received approval from the HLC to offer its Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) degree. This program will be low-residency - online classes with five on-campus weekend residencies each year (Two in the fall, Two in the spring, and One in the summer). https://www.marshall.edu/graduate-council/files/DBA-Intent-to-Plan-1-29-19.pdf Based on Marshall's earlier Intent to Plan, the DBA "is a research-based doctoral program that combines a disciplined approach to scholarship with a focus on compelling problems of practice." "The proposed DBA program is in line with the College’s accrediting body, AACSB, that has encouraged its members to develop innovative doctoral programs that support business executives in advancing within their existing industry or becoming full-time faculty members." Marshall University, Huntington, WV Approved the institution’s request for approval to offer the Doctor of Business Administration. https://www.hlcommission.org/Student-Resources/june-2020-actions.html
This is interesting. I went and read their filing documents. 66 credits at $850 per credit and AACSB accredited is VERY competitive in the online/hybrid DBA world when it comes to AACSB programs. Relatively low residency which is nice. It seems it is aimed more at people wanting to move into academics with the dissertation. In a DBA program where you are applying theory to business situations instead of researching new models or theories, I prefer to see an applied project. However, that is me just nit picking.
Is their DBA accredited by AACSB? It does not seem to be accredited URL: https://datadirect.aacsb.edu/public/profiles/profile.cfm?interstitialComplete=1&runReport=1&unitid=54701&userType=All
I would assume they are in the accreditation process. Their filing documents make it seem like it will be accredited by the time a cohort graduates.
Maybe not. However, in the context of tenure-track faculty hiring, an AACSB-accredited doctorate is almost never listed. Instead, the posts are often worded as "Ph.D. or DBA from an AACSB accredited school." So, it seems to me that the significance of the AACSB accreditation is placed on the Business School rather than the individual programs.
There are also times in which the PhD is not housed in the business school but rather the Graduate School.
