Yet another ultra-frugal MBA - $1000, dealer-may-sell-for-less, apparently. 'Unaccredited and proud of it.' I'm holding out for a free MBA if I enrol in a DBA...

    Hello!

Seen it. To put it in pseudolatin: veni, vidi, fugi. Thought a MicroMBA from edX would be a better choice. Similar price, similar learnings, even better price, some value regarding accreditation / credit transfer.

"Alternative to an MBA". One may as well do No Pay MBA for free.

    Hello!

One valid reason to do it however might be the possibility to do some networking. If I remember Henry Mintzbergs "Managers Not MBAs: A Hard Look at the Soft Practice of Managing and Management Development" correctly, this is one of the main reasons to go to a business school and get an MBA in the first place.

Then again, there are other cheaper possibilities to do so.

Agreed. What Laurie has come up with on that site - properly presented - is an alternative much easier for people to believe in - both learners and prospective employers, I would think.

"So, you have a micro-MBA, earned with micro-learning? Well, we can offer you a micro-position, handling very small projects - at a micro-salary, of course."
Might be OK for grads who tend to micro-manage.

    OK, that was funny, admittedly.

However, these MicroMasters from edX are poorly named but have at least some value in the academic world, most have credit transfer to a "real" master degree.

Agreed. I just think the name is silly, although the credential represents useful learning. Even sillier (and still smaller) are the names nano- and pico-degree. Yes, they exist - not as sub-atomic particles or figments of an old man's imagination, either. They are discussed here: https://www.degreeinfo.com/index.php?threads/altmba.55835/#post-524622.

    Hello!

Regarding nanaodegrees: I got one from udacity ("Data Foundations"). Really terrible name, but a great program. Aside from this, sometimes, nanodegrees even have academical value. AKAD university, for example, offers one in Digital Transformation for free (in German language): https://www.akad.de/weiterbildung/lehrgang/digital-transformation-1/. It is worth 5 ECTS points.

Ha! I just got a 404 on the pico-degree site. Really! I guess the "degree" got so small it disappeared! Or maybe the site morphed into a (Nigerian) 419!

Picodegrees are, if taken literally, impossible.

A standard degree could have, say, 240 ECTS. This equates roughly 240 x 30 = 7200 hours or approx. 26 million seconds. So, a microdegree would be less than half a minute and a picodegree... well... you won't even be able to notice the time span.

Right. I looked for it and, as some comedian said "there it was - - - GONE!"

    Hello!

I told my CEO about this programme and he offered me to pay for it. Being an opportunist, I thanked him, enrolled and found it great. So far, I have taken several courses comparable to this one. I will try to compare them shortly and I will try to be as objective as I can.

Quantic School of Business and Technology: Business Foundations

Great, free course. You have, however to pay with your personal data and with your time. Funny introduction into business microeconomics, basic statistics. You get a certificate at the end of the course, and if you apply successfully, you can "transfer" your successes.

    IIMB Micromasters

Very interesting course. A little less funny than the first mentioned. English almost incomprehensible, but there are scripts. Costs are approx. $800 for the courses. Exams are sometimes multiple choice and sometimes peer-reviewed assignments. The MicroMaster itself may have some prestige.

    Power MBA

Short learnings. Good and interesting videos. Very well explained. Interesting teachers, staff very responsive. Vibrant community, good opportunities for networking. This is *not* an university in any way, so, do not mistake it for an accredited course. Not entirely sure if it would be worth $1ooo if I would have to pay myself, but in this situation, I think it is pretty cool and I was thankful for the opportunity.

Well, maybe this could be helpful. At least, I hope so!

    Best regards,
    Mac Juli

I've seen ads for the PowerMBA but I don't think I would try it myself. 250+ 15 minute videos = 62.5 (let's round up to 63 hours), for $850 = $13.49 an hour. It feels pricey. I'm liking Quantic's "Business Foundations" course, but it worries me that there's so much "scaffolding" for you. I think it's easy to pass through the lessons without actually absorbing the material. Maybe regular MBA programs are like that too, with only exams weighted greatly compared to the lectures/quizzes which aren't weighed very much? I'm not sure. But it makes me nervous.

I'll know in December if I was accepted for the free MBA or (more likely) made a tuition offer on the EMBA. A free NA MBA would be valuable to me, but I'd need to seriously weigh the EMBA against other schools that money could go.

It is. But you don't pay for the business education anyway. The whole thing is just a pretext for networking. The whole thing is about showing on linkedin "I am ambitious and I am not afraid to show it, now give me a good job!".

So, it might not be the right thing for you anyway if you come from the social background. Or, take this as a compliment: jugding by the things you write here, you seem to be too pure-minded to benefit from this whole thing anyway.

    :)
