Had a great phone conversation this morning with the President and CEO of US Polo Assn. Global Licensing Inc. He is going to write me a Letter of Recommendation and send it to the Dean of Fuqua as well as the Director of Admissions at Fuqua. He said it may not make much difference in the admissions decision but a letter from the President and CEO of a multi-billion dollar company could not hurt. Again, hoping to hear something within the next week or so!

I doubt the Coronavirus is helping the decision process.

Johns Hopkins admissions counselor that I worked with reached out and said that things are a little behind due to the virus. She said my application is with the admissions committee now and should hear something within a week.

Duke gave themselves a cushion from the get go stating it would take 2-4 weeks from application submission. If that holds true, the earliest I would hear something would be early next week and the latest would be the end of the month.

I am supposed to have an advisor meeting on April 1st with Mizzou so I should have plenty of time to get admissions decisions and be able to make a selection on which program I will pursue.

I am officially at 2 weeks and 1 day since I have had a completed profile for Duke. Tomorrow will make 3 weeks that I have had a completed profile for Johns Hopkins. Hoping to hear something from both programs relatively soon.

I just learned that the Krannert School of Management at Purdue University is offering a Master of Science in Business Analytics online now so I am in the application process for that program as well. Krannert is well-known in that area so I figured I would give it a shot. At this point, if I do not get admitted to Duke then I will pursue the MS in Finance with Mizzou regardless of the JHU decision. If I get admitted to Purdue then that will definitely throw a kink in things because they are pretty well-regarded for their STEM progams.

Okay, let's see if I understand this . . . You have now been accepted by both Mizzou and Johns Hopkins, and have an application riding with Duke. On top of all those, you are now applying to Purdue. Um, are you nuckin' futz? :D

I generally don't like to repeat myself, but this time I'll make an exception before I provide a piece of feedback . . .
Well, so much for that advice . . . You've just added a fourth application to the process.

    A couple of impressions for what they're worth . . .

First, I would avoid Purdue. I realize you're talking about Purdue's business school, but with the highly publicized acquisition of Kaplan (a for-profit) by Purdue (resulting in the creation of Purdue Global), Purdue's reputational stock as a whole probably went down a couple of notches. Even if you go with their more respected business school, there are many people who will assume you went the Purdue Global route, and any semblance of prestige will go down the tubes. Purdue is a respectable school, but it ain't no Duke or Hopkins.

Second, Purude has the M.S. in Business Analytics. Duke, as prestigious as it is, has the M.S. in Quantitative Management. The other two schools to which you've applied have a good ol' M.S. in Finance. Based on degree title alone, which sounds the most credible? Call me naive, but I would think it's the M.S. in Finance. It's not Business, it's not Accounting, but it's an area broad enough to cover a lot more bases and doesn't sound esoteric to the point of being a space cadet degree.

Another old recollection, although one I haven't used for a few years: I knew a guy from Vermont College of Norwich U. who was doing his master's degree on "The Weathered Women Project," a fascinating study based on oral histories. When you would ask what his major was, he would answer, "The Weathered Women Project." Fortunately, I was able to convince him that it was a great thesis title but a lousy degree title. He changed it to an M.A. in Women's Studies, and had both broader appeal and more success with his final degree. To me, FWIW, an M.S. in Finance seems to have broader appeal and more potential for success than an M.S. in Quantitative Management or Business Analytics, both of which sound way too esoteric to be of broad value. This is especially the case on top of your existing M.B.A. To me, the Quan. Mgt. and Bus. Anal. degree titles sound like the kind of cash cow schools are tending to come up with these days - something with which to bait people into their programs, but not of much value in the actual marketplace.

So, sit back . . . Take a deep but relaxed breath. Now breathe out. Kick back and have a cup of decaf - you're mind is still racing too much for leaded coffee. Toss Purdue out of the mix and think about the other three - which one, gut impression, do you like the most? You're not shopping for jewelry here, so a mindset of, "Gee, they're all so pretty I want to buy all of them" won't cut it in the end run. If you make the wrong decision, we're only gonna see you posting in the washout thread, and that would be a drag.

If I went the Finance route, it would be a tough decision. Mizzou is well-established in business education whereas Johns Hopkins is one of the newer business programs.

That said, although Business Analytics is a newer area of business, I would not hesitate to pursue that path through Duke. Fuqua has clout in companies.

Krannert has continued to drop in rankings but their Business Analytics program is one of the best in the country. They beat out several Ivy Leagues in placements with that degree path.

I have pretty well eliminated any other program.

Josh, just to educate myself, where do you guys go to find university rankings for individual degrees. Oftentimes, I find it by school or university as a whole.
Hard to be so granular, if one is doing it for personal benefit or corporate advancement.
Are you seeking a future teaching career otherwise?

I typically look by the business schools full-time MBA ranking. I am doing this degree for personal benefit for the most part with the possibility of corporate advancement and teaching.

    Congrats on Hopkins!!!

You have great options, Hopkins is a stellar university and a great name brand to add to your CV. Hopefully Duke replies shortly.

    Good luck!

Thank you! I am not so patiently waiting for Duke. Ha! Not sure what to expect as I had applied right before Covid-19 started wreaking havoc on us. I know that they are swamped moving everything virtual and trying to do admissions for the MBA, MQM and MSQM programs. My fingers are crossed for this week though. Tuesday will be the 3 week mark that my file has been sent to adcoms.
