Ayyyy... I'm not sure why it has to be a question of science VS the Bible. First, there is limitless room for interpretation of ancient texts. How many of those creationists also believe in the immortal soul? Something the Bible absolutely never mentions, nor even hints at, and plenty of times contradicts. Also, Genesis describes progressive introduction of various forms of life, and doesn't give enough detail to rule out evolution as the means by which it may have occured. Lastly, the global flood story can not be true unless evolution is also true. I mean... were there platypuses on the ark?
The theme of the nice new novel, The Old Man's Game, deals with a charismatic rabbi who is absolutely convinced that Exodus is a fake -- that the Egyptians dutifully and extensive recorded huge amounts of detailed history, and not a single word (the author says) about the existent of huge numbers of Jews in Egypt, or a guy named Moses, etc. etc. I guess I'd never thought of that, and find it intriguing.
