    As an aside:

"This is your last free story."

Why on earth does anyone publish on Medium? If you want an unrestricted readership just put up a WordPress site. It looks just as good, and it's cheap and easy.

SEO. There's a lot of known tricks that use Medium to exploit... I mean, creatively construct benefits from non-value added work...

Seriously, Hille's friend could qualify for a PhD in Education tuition free - at one of the best schools. Stanford. There's a stipend with it too. How much? I'm not sure - I think between $25K to 40K a year. Funding is guaranteed for 5 years and they say that such degrees are generally finished within that time. I scanned a list of 25 PhD programs available tuition-free and Stanford was the only school I saw offering a PhD in education under those terms.

I realize this is not distance learning. Sadly, I cannot find this kind of financial opportunity in distance mode. If it's not possible, due to a job, or the pension that comes with it - I'm sorry it won't apply. Money-wise, it beats everything else hands down and quality-wise it's top-notch. It's Stanford. What else could it be?

If this info is no good to anyone - I'm sorry, again. I know how it feels to have to stay at a job to ensure your future. At 46, when I got through college for the first time, I was offered a great opportunity at a terrific school, within commuting distance, just across the border in the US. 50% off tuition, two years and I would (likely) have the key to the executive washroom. I couldn't do it. I intended to retire in four years (as I did) and I had to stay in harness till then to be officially retired - and take the money and run. So I did.

Retired 27 years now. Grandpa of four. Enough schoolin' since to keep me out of trouble. Regret not having a degree from that school - only a little, and if I lie down it goes away. Don't regret retiring - and someone else can have the key to the exec. washroom. We all have to make choices.
