Midwifery is a form of advance nursing. Typically, the field is filled with RNs who have gone back to earn master's degrees in it. Other advanced practice nursing fields include nurse anesthetist and nurse practitioner. (The physician assistant field also draws a lot from nursing, but it isn't a requirement to be a nurse first in order to become a PA.) But, consistent with nursing over the past 5 decades, we've seen a continued expansion of degree requirements and expectations. What required a master's before can now be done with the doctorate. Some doctoral programs are designed for advanced-practice nurses who are already licensed, others are the program that leads to the license.
