I doubt it was a matter of him being "fired." Medvedev goes where Putin needs him to go. Putin is PM? Hey, Medvedev, go sit in the President chair until I can get it back. Putin is President? Hey, Medvedev, go keep the PM chair warm until I can get it back. Now Putin is making his move to consolidate power. Medvedev did what he was supposed to do. I'm sure he will always enjoy a place of privilege within Putin's regime unless he truly falls out of favor.
