Curious. For those who've taught online and in traditional or blended formats, how has it differed for you?

    Pedagogy vs. andragogy.

Well that is the second new word I've learned on this site! Who do I send a tuition payment to? :D

You can send the check to my account in Germany. Details to follow.

Beyond that I would say that while I don't track members resumes my casual memory tells me that we've had some people who have taught online and others that have taught in a classroom based setting, I don't know that anyone has done both. Maybe Tony Pina?

I've done both. I'm also certified in online instructional development and delivery from the University of Madison-Wisconsin, and have completed online instructor training with a couple of other universities. I've taught online in several programs. I've also taught in the classroom--academic and professional--for the past 40 years.

The difference boils down to andragogy (the teaching of adults) and pedagogy (the teaching of children).

Most classroom-based programs are based on pedagogy--instructor-centered. I teach, you learn. I decide what to teach and for you to learn. I also decide how it will happen and how it will be measured. There's no real difference in this approach as it is applied to a college classroom or one in elementary school.

Online learning, effectively employed does not strive to replicate the classroom. In fact, it fails at doing this in an online, asynchronous environment. Instead, learning goals are set, content is selected, expectations are stated, and learning is measured. But it is (largely) up to each student to determine how he/she will learn the material. Instead of being a teacher, the faculty member is a facilitator of the participants' learning.

This extends to assignments as well, which in the online environment tend to be better integrated into experienced students' careers and work lives. This can occur in the classroom, too, especially when the program is specifically designed for working adults.

I've also taught pedagogically online as well. This is done synchronously with webinars, where class participants all log in at a specific time and date, usually using webcams on their computers and sharing a work space that appears on everyone's screens.

    Hope this helps.
