I liked the in-your-face nature of the original XFL. If they water down the new league (and they likely will because the world is a socially different place than it was in 2001), it may not be as interesting to me. Although, the AAF had very entertaining football but that was because it was brutal and had way less penalties like the old school NFL used to be like, so maybe if the XFL can mimic that it will be good. Only thing I didn't like with the original XFL were the skits and the wrestling tie-ins. I get that they were trying to replicate the successful formula they had in place with the WWE, but still, that part was awful. Luckily, they won't be doing that this time around.

With the Patriots out of the running, I confess that my interest in football has dropped precipitously (that's my big word for the day).
But I know I'll watch the Superbowl and it's going to be a good game. Jimmy G. still carries that Patriots connection so I'll be cheering for San Francisco. I don't know who the halftime show is going to be. It'll have to be quite a performance if they're going to beat Lady Gaga from ?2 years ago. Anyway, the 49ers will be wearing the white and gold and hopefully there will be a bunch of fun, creative commercials to watch too. Yeah, and one more thing. Robert Kraft took some heat in New England for not bringing back Antonio Brown but right about now he's probably giving himself a pat on the back for a good decision. Brown is looking like half a lunatic and he'll be lucky if he doesn't wind up in jail, or worse.

This is just a little follow up story for anyone who has an interest in tracking the trajectory of a drug abusing, prima donna x-pro athlete in the middle of a self-destructive spiral. Best of luck Antonio. You're going to need it.

Super Bowl is today. I live in the SF bay area, so I'm required by law to cheer for the 49ers.

But truth be told, I wouldn't be too crushed if the Chiefs win. I like the team, I like the city of Kansas City (everything's up to date in Kansas City!) and its extraordinarily friendly people, and I like Andy Reid too. Besides, KC needs a Super Bowl championship more than the bay area does. (We just got done with the Warriors' run, the Giants before that, the 49'ers other five Super Bowl victories, the Raiders and the A's...)

Kizmet's right, we have Jimmy G, who is pretty good. He looked to me to be Tom Brady's heir apparent, until Bill Belichick inexplicably traded him to SF for next to nothing. (So who is going to replace Tom now? Tom's 87 years old and plays with a NE Patriots walker.)

Jimmy's first year with SF was when he took over in the middle of a season when the 49ers were 1-10. Then Jimmy finished out that same season 5-0 with that same team and was still undefeated at the time as a starter both at SF and NE. Then he blew up his knee last year. Now he's healthy and he's got SF in the Super Bowl.

But SF's strength isn't Jimmy G, or even its extraordinarily good offensive line and running game. San Francisco's strength is its defense.

Of course, Patrick Mahomes looks like an extraordinary talent and I'd actually rate KC's offense as better than the 49'ers'. But while KC's defense is very good, I think that SF's is better.

And as they say, "Defense wins championships".

I expect a very good Super Bowl. Competitive to the end.

Tom Brady is an unrestricted free agent now and there's talk around the country of where he will sign - who will give him the most money, where he has the best chance of winning another Superbowl and endless discussion on Boston sports radio on every single minute detail. My opinion is that he'll re-sign with the Patriots and get to at least one more Superbowl before he's through. Jimmy G is a good quarterback. Good enough to win todays game. Mahomes is exceptional across the board. It's the classic battle of the best offense against the best defense. My bet, the 49ers win

You would not believe how stupid it's gotten in Boston. All this talk about Tom Brady and where will he sign. March 18th if the free-agency date and I'll guess we'll know then. In the meantime, read about this Williams guy from the Jets. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt as to what he intended to do with the handgun. But in this day and age you have to be reallyreally remarkably stupid to try to bring a handgun onto an airplane.

There is a lot of buzz here in San Francisco about Brady joining the 49ers. I mean, he grew up here and has family here. And Garoppolo back to Boston, perhaps. Hey, how that Eddie DeBartolo is no longer a criminal, maybe he'll stop back in and do interesting stuff.

Even with their mediocre record of 2-2, the D.C. Defenders are still the best pro football team we've had in a long time.

Because of a series of rule changes going back to the lat 1970s, the NFL is now a quarterbacks' league. Offense over defense. Passing over rushing. Quarterbacks uber alles. In addition to rule changes that favor passing, there have been myriad changes to protect the QBs. Paradoxically, these changes have encouraged more passing and, thus, put QBs in ever-increasing danger.

Other changes include field maintenance (including artificial turf), the offenses each having their own set of footballs, and better (if not sufficient) helmets, pads, and facemasks. Quarterbacks used to make up a disproportionately small part of the Hall of Fame. Now they matter more than anything. Since 2000, almost every Super Bowl winner was quarterbacked by a now or future hall-of-famer.

With the leagues heavily invested in fantasy football and other forms of gambling, this isn't going to change anytime soon.
