Farewell to Jennifer

Jennifer wrote the above on 12/31/19 at https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-Adieu-Aufwiedersehen-Gesundheit-Farewell. (You should read the whole thread – it’s a hoot.) She did not, however, write a similar post at DegreeInfo, but has not posted here since 12/20/19 (although she does check in occasionally, even as recently as two days ago, presumably to keep up to date).

Needless to say, since Jennifer is quite rightfully popular, there was a slew of “Gee, we’ll miss you, hugs, blah-blah-blah” messages that followed, turning her farewell into an eight-page thread thus far.

But there’s a fascinating twist. The powers-that-be at DegreeForum had apparently given Jennifer additional editing rights, which included the ability for her to delete older messages. So she did – she deleted virtually every message she has posted on the board, and when people realized it, they went ballistic. Everybody started whining.

How many messages did Jennifer delete? That’s hard to say, since they’re deleted. But if her history on DegreeInfo is any indication, where she has posted 4,313 messages since 2007, it’s a lot of posts that went blowing in the wind.

Why do Jennifer’s messages still appear here at DegreeInfo? Simple – she didn’t have the same ability to edit previous posts that she had been granted at DegreeForum.

Personally, I think she went out with style – her farewell is perfectly lovely, and she did something that every author would love to be able to do – control her own publicity. There have been times I’ve wished that I could wipe out virtually every reference to me on the Internet – good, bad, or indifferent – as well as everything I’ve ever written. I’ve managed to stay quiet enough over the years that a search on my last name alone, which would load the screen with links to me, no longer does – now if a last-name search includes one reference to me on the first page or two, that’s a lot. And, to this day, there has never been a picture of me online – a photo search on my name will punch up some strange pics, which have included Alan Contraras and George Gollin, but never me. Go figure…

So here’s to Jennifer. Y’all might think I’m going to diss her, but in fact, there’s nothing to diss. IMO, she pulled her grand exit off with style.

    Jennifer,

Wish you the absolute best with your new adventure. Have no doubt you'll be a phenomenal change leader at your new school!

....and imagine that while there was likely a good intention, the above quote summarizes why it was probably wise to wipe a slate.

She was a great contributor to this forum. But I can absolutely understand not wanting some flippant past comment potentially affect one's ability to work within "the system." I wish her the best.

I agree – Jennifer was a class act, and will be missed around here. I can see why her decision to leave grew to include pulling the plug on her relationship with and participation in the forum. A significant push seems to have come from a familiar toxic source who used to post here, and to have been building up to a head for a while. In several posts this person expressed resentment against Jennifer writing a book and, with another member there, creating a masterclass for homeschooling parents that cost money.

Clarification - pulling the plug on DF, not DI !

As of this writing, the DF thread (linked in OP here) is up to eight pages and 73 replies. A few of the mods over there are in the process of restoring Jennifer's posts (presumably without her involvement), and a few users are speculating whether Jennifer will sue DF (despite the fact that there is no indication of that).

In short, this is becoming the soap opera of the year so far, and we're not even through January yet. Quite a hoot . . .

Jennifer's last post on DI was back in December, not that long ago. She's said nothing to me or anyone else about leaving although the fact is that most people who stop posting just stop posting. They don't make a big deal out of it, they just stop coming back. So maybe that's her plan. Clearly, she's a respected member and she's welcome here anytime it works for her. As for deleting posts, it's something that she is not able to do here and I'm sure she knows that. If I had to bet I'd say she'll drop in on us again sometime. Either way, I hope she and her family are well.

I’ll bite... why on earth would you take pleasure in this? If someone is trying to support their family, add value to a new organization, and help others... shouldn’t we just calmly wish them well?

I do wish Jennifer well - she's one of the few folks on these forums that qualifies as "good people." I'm definitely on her side on this - but I like a good drama.

I'm still a member here, thus no farewell post - but I am quite busy and haven't gotten here too much lately.

For what it's worth, I didn't DELETE anything (as is being reported over there) rather I edited my comments. This distinction is important because I left the structure of each and every thread- as well as everyone else's words perfectly intact. To be precise, I edited 10,151 comments. (only mine)

The "broken links" and following chaos is a result of the moderators and owner going in and deleting posts and threads. They've shut down my username, so if you see any posts or content attached to my username, it's all them - apparently, Steve believes he owns my words and has told me as much. As such.....

I am replying to Jennifer's post but speaking primarily to the newbies who might be reading this. At DI we try not to delete posts at all. We have had instances of deleting/editing posts upon request but most of these are to protect the poster's identity and mostly no one even notices that it's been done. Beyond that I would point out that the Terms of Service specifically state that DI becomes the exclusive owner of posts. This means, among other things, that members can not demand that posts be deleted. I'm glad that Jennifer is still around and that this is not an issue.

Just to be clear, the Steve to which Jennifer refers here is sgloer (the administrator of DF), not me.

I, by the way, have never posted at DF - nothing against them. But nothing for them. It's just, like, why would I need to contribute there when my affections are toward y'all here? :D

On the other hand, the self-important and utterly raving lunatic who calls himself Maniac Craniac on that forum is in fact the same self-important and utterly raving lunatic who posts here by that name.

I don't agree with sanantone on this one. I'm not going to debate the point, I'm just going to vote Team Derosa on this one. Also, thanks to Kizmet for clearly explaining DI's editorial stance.

And, speaking of members in absentia, it is now several months since we have heard from sanantone. The last time she appeared at DegreeForum was December 13th, and her last time here at DI was December 15th.

    Which begs several questions:
    • Is she still alive?
    • Is she dead?
    • Did she get bored with us and finally get a life?
    • Did she get coronavirus?
    • Is she finally working on completing her alleged doctorate?
    • Does anybody really care?

She was a more helpful person than some that could be mentioned.

Without speaking out of place, she is active elsewhere.
