I am interested in seeking a research-only doctorate in theology that I can do from a distance. I have a conservative view of the inspiration of Scripture, but have some minority theological views, so a lot of the major seminaries in the US are not options. What schools should I consider?

I have looked into Greenwich School of Theology, UK. Information about their school would also be appreciated.

I would like to research the soteriological contribution of dispensational theology. Depending on the emphasis, it could work as a topic in Systematic Theology or in Historical Theology.

I have access to a great theological library locally.

Well, not original, but check out the University of the Freestate.

    Grant,

Just curious what you have decided?

A colleague of mine, Dr. Michael Walsh received his first doctorate from Greenwich. He also holds a DMus from elsewhere. He was quite fulsome in his praise although is a few years ago. From memory he was quite impressed with the faculty but beyond that I can't recall much more.

In non-Anglican UK circles it has long had a reputation as an alternative to mainstream theology degrees, especially after changing its affiliations.

"Research-only" is the "big book" approach to the doctorate. This can be found in the UK, South Africa, and Australia, among others.

Please note that "research-only" does not mean "distance only." Even if the university does not stipulate any particular form

    Rich,

What does that mean exactly? Do you mean to say that some schools will require some on-site research or perhaps another form of on-site connection to the Faculty?

    Thanks,

Yes. Unless the school explicitly states that no time on campus is required, it's a really good idea to discuss it with them. It could vary from program to program or even advisor to advisor.

Consider the South African Theological Seminary. This school is fully accredited and has some good scholars. If you do not see a potential supervisor with expertise in your topic, you can recruit someone and, if approved, SATS will take them on as temporary faculty.

We have had at least one member complete the doctoral program. It has received consistently positive reviews. Our search widget will bring up multiple threads related to this school.
