being that they are the same school under one parent entity, American Public University System, it is a moot point but APU is synonymous with their education partnership with Walmart which may lead some employers to look at it as a low class collegiate education while AMU gives some validity, if only due to its name, and leads employers to believe in the existance of an underlying partnership with the military. Neither case is actually true as AMU/APU has no military affiliation whatsoever and their programs are top notch. So in my opinion I suppose I would say AMU.

Not sure. They are accredited which is the main thing and not the stupidest sounding names (Trident, Capella, Argosy, Excelsior are all odd choices for names but all fully accredited). American Military University either sounds like a military academy or a university for military people. American Public University can sound like a continuing ed program run by PBS or NPR. It could also sound like a government university depending on the ear hearing it said or the eye seeing it written.

In the end, if they have the program you want and since they are well respected and accredited, go for it.

I would list it how it is on the transripts/diploma. Personally, I would prefer American Military University.

I am faculty there and I use "American Military University" most of the time when discussing the school with others.

That is good enough for me, I agree with that choice datapoly.

I chose "AMU" over "APU" even though I am not in the military.

The "PU" part just didn't work for me.

I’ve always preferred the name American Military University far more than APU. AMU is the original name, prior to accreditation – first with DETC and dually /subsequently HLC-NCA. AMU is the school’s historical foundation brand.

But a possible downside regarding AMU, many will understandably associate this name with the US military. That can be positive or even neutral, but could also be cynically viewed in some circles. For instance, it’s been my experience within the public education industry that many at senior management level care little for and are biased against the military. And in all fairness, though AMU has no [official] military connection, the university is historically pro-military leaning and led. This is evident beginning with its (AMU) initial days and founder, e.g., with prior senior ranking military serving on its board of trustees, its leadership teams and academic staff particularly preceding its APUS (APEI) 2007 IPO (NASDAQ) launch. As regards perception (positive, negative or neutral), APUS has three retired generals serving on its Board (Gen. Alfred Gray, 29th USMC Commandant, LTG Julius Becton, Jr., USA and LTG Richard Trefry, USA) and two additional veterans (e.g., 5 of the 9 board trustees are prior US military officers). Moreover, two of its seven board of directors’ members are former military officers (one a ret. USA MG). Re APUS Board of Trustees

With the addition of the APUS /APU more generic name (via an in-house substitute brand offering) most likely aid in lessening possible negative perception of direct military association— expanding its product, offering more customer choice, increased appeal to investors, and competitive reach and growth beyond that of its original AMU brand.

I think that American Public University is such a benign, common-sounding name that people are likely to forget it as soon as they hear it. That may be good or bad, depending on how you look at it. If all anyone needs to know is that you have a degree, then it may be good that they just glance over it, forget it, and don't let the decreasingly common but unfortunately real anti-DL bias come into play.

I would say that either of which sounds just fine, and the one you want depends upon the image you want to portray at first glance.

I am not sure of overall APUS enrollment breakdowns between APU and AMU, but in the programs that I teach in (emergency management, fire science, and homeland security) I would estimate that 90% of the students I see are enrolled in AMU.

Either name would work, the name change is just for branding anyhow. Although, if your a civilian, I wouldn't use AMU unless you want people to give you that WTF look, lol.

As a former Navy guy, I lean toward AMU. Plus, I just think it sounds better.

I also like the AMU name better. But I'm biased since I'm in the ANG.

When I finish my D.Min. I have considered their M.A. in ancient history for personal development. My wife says that AMerican Public University sounds like a "government cheese" school :) it does sound like it's ran by PBS or NPR... Funny

Honesty, most real employers unless you graduate from an Ivy League in which this is irrelevant or an 'in' state school no one cares. The employer will not recognize either name. They will basically see 'Bachelors' and work experience. If you've no experience then worry about it. If you have experience be ready to discuss it in the interview. But, they will not case where you graduated from or your gpa.

Facts from someone who's been there and does the recommendations for hiring. Simply be a people person. If not go into computer programming and make an app.

Please take several seats. So many flaws in your reasoning. Don't let your experience fool you into believing that the majority operates in the way your company does.
