First my post was on Wednesday and on Wednesday my statement was the truth.

Second, MSNBC no longer has an online "newspaper" (not sure what else to call it). Pointing to advertising blurbs for their MSNBC TV channel is not relevant to this discussion, IMHO.

Third, looking at CNN the lead story is the lt gov. and the second story is about the governor. That seems fine to me. If you don't like it, oh well.

Fourth, listening to the talk shows on MSNBC and CNN a common position seems to be that both the governor and lt. governor should resign which would make a Republican the governor. I would agree with this position. The reason is that it is the right thing to do and also, the Democratic party is on a bit of a roll because in part it is the "party for women" and the party for minorities. This nasty mess will significantly step on that position. The party got rid of Al Franken very quickly for that reason and these two need to resign quickly for that same reason.

Fifth, I haven't listened to Fox News in the last week. I had made an assumption that Bruce's statement was made due to poor reporting by Fox News and their characterization of how this sad thing was being handled by the Democrats. Since this basic assumption was not questioned, I guess that means that my basic assumption about Fox News reporting was probably correct. :)

Third in line is the Attorney General, a Democrat who has also been found to have appeared in blackface. Fourth in line is the Speaker of the House of Delegates, a Republican. (No idea what the skeletons in his closet are.)

As an explanation for the youngster, Southern Democrats were notoriously racist. After LBJ (a Texas southern democrat) got the Civil Rights act passed, the Southern states eventually switched parties to Republican. This flipped the southern states from a Democrat stronghold to a Republican stronghold. So that's how the party of Lincoln that freed the slaves has moved to be the favorite party for racists. Note, no way does this imply that Republicans are necessarily racist, just that most racist will be Republican, especially with Trump in the White House.

What more do Democrats have to do to cure you of that misconception?

    Ummmm....what??

I can’t think of many things more racist than to insist that blacks and other minorities are too dumb to obtain government identification to vote, or that they need special privileges to obtain government jobs, college scholarships, and _______. All hallmarks of the Democrat party.

What party is it again that the Governor and AG of Virginia belong to? You know, the guys who wore blackface and/or dressed up as KKK members?

    Hi Bruce,

If this was in response to my post, most of your post seems irrelevant to my post?

If you're questioning my assertion that the Republican party is the favorite party for racists, I thought this was obvious? If not then this should be clear if one looks at some surveys.

If you're questioning the assertion that the Civil Rights act is what initiated the move of the south from Democrat to Republican, let me know and I'll try to find a supporting link.

(Sorry, I accidentally hit done before I wrote anything in my previous response.)

Oops. I should have checked my facts first. They were all Southern politicians, but some were Democrats and others Republicans.

Many Democrats have initially condemned him so as to signal their righteousness and their virtue. (Culture today has become a giant race-obsessed morality play.)

But having performed those contortions, the whole thing becomes an embarrassment and they will want to sweep it under the rug and "move on". We are seeing much of the media already doing that.

So all Northam has to do is hold tight and resist resigning until things quiet down. Of course all of this will come back to haunt him when he runs for reelection (expect Democratic primary challengers to revive it), but that's a ways off.

Of course. We see that every day with the entirely concocted "Trump's Russia collusion" narrative. Endless daily teases about investigations that are about to being Trump down any moment. Stuff 'journalists' (propagandists) say they heard from unnamed "sources". Anything to keep the narrative alive.

The Republican Speaker of the House was the editor of a yearbook that had multiple racist images and racial slurs. I don't know why people here are acting ignorant of southern history and think this is somehow a party thing.

A Democratic legislature is drafting articles of impeachment for Justin Fairfax since there is now a second allegation of rape. If only the Republican Party had similar standards.

Did you miss that the Republican Secretary of State in Florida resigned over dressing up in blackface making from of Hurricane Katrina evacuees? This wasn't a 19 year old dressing up like his favorite rapper like the Virginia AG did in the 80s. This was a grown man in the 2000s making fun of black people who were devastated by one of the most destructive hurricanes to hit the U.S.

Since when do minorities receive special privileges for government jobs? I'm black and a woman, and I had to apply to hundreds of government jobs at all levels before landing one. Only Native Americans receive preference for certain federal government jobs that are on American Indian reservations. Affirmative Action is not race specific. Affirmative Action applies to any underrepresented group, and there have been white people who have been admitted to HBCUs and given scholarships because of AA. White women are the biggest beneficiaries of AA. Research has shown that poor people are disproportionately affected by voter ID laws, and poor people are disproportionately minorities. A Republican politician from Florida and others have admitted that voter ID laws were designed to suppress the minority vote.

He can't run for reelection as governor. Did you miss my post informing Bruce that Virginia is a one-term state?

Republican Lee Atwater said that Reagan's campaign sent out dog whistles to southern voters; that was part of the southern strategy. Nixon also sent out dog whistles in an attempt to get southern votes. Those Reagan Democrats from the South are now mostly Republicans, and they're just as racist now as they were 30 years ago.

Most of the racists are still in the south. We fought a civil war over racism/slavery. We all know which side of the war the South was on. It takes a long time for this stuff to get better, many generations. I think Trump is an example of a step back in the "2-step-forward-1-step-back" story of typical social progress. This is right after our first black President after all. I know that society is better off now than 30 or 40 years ago because people are much less likely to admit these days that they are racist. So there is a much stronger social stigma associated with racism now.

I saw a show about LBJ getting the civil rights law passed and there was bits of him talking to his fellow southern Democrats, doing his arm twisting to get their vote. They were throwing around the n-word back and forth in the discussion.

Thank you so much for that great link! Very interesting read. I also really liked the articles linked from that article.

From a linked article, I was very pleased to learn that, "White people are winning the war on whites" (An amusing position that I sometimes hear from my Republican friends. Full disclosure, I'm a privileged white retired male that is married to a non-white.)

The article make a distinction between white, black, and hispanic. My guess most hispanic are white. A household is even more complicated.
