The Patriots just won their sixth Superbowl 13-3 (a stout defensive struggle where neither side could really move the ball) and you won your bet. It's the lowest scoring Superbowl ever.

    Congrats to you--killed that bet.

Edelman played lights out and it's understandable he got the MVP, but it also would've been fitting for the whole Pats D to get it. Those guys who'd just gotten roasted and toasted for 24 points in the 4th quarter alone(!) by Mahomes bounced back big time and flat out exposed the Goff kid at QB. The difference in the game was Brady, as usual, didn't choke when the chips were down, but the kid, when he had the chance, gagged and threw that jump ball up late. And that was it. Brady took what was given him and didn't try to force it or panic, and when he saw the chance, made the most of it, and got that single precious TD. There's why Brady is the perfect QB for Belichick's system: you give him what he needs (time in the pocket, some reliable 3rd down receivers) and he's not going to go and beat himself. He's not the most physically talented guy ever at QB, but he knows how to read a defense, knows how to find the open man (admittedly, probably easier for him than anyone else in his generation, given all he's had to work with), doesn't get down on himself when he does something stupid (like that opening int or the should've been an int late) and is NOT a choke job.

I was rooting for the Not-patriots. :( It was a good game despite the tragic result.

I was not looking forward to Maroon 5, but was at least pleasantly surprised that most of the songs they played were from the one good album they ever made. They also played their worst 2 songs (possibly also my personal 2 least favorite songs of all time), but at least I knew it was coming.

All in all, the halftime show was boring, but not aggravating. To me, anyway. A certain (small but extremely vocal) collection of people were angry that there wasn't a political message to the performance. Because absolutely everything has to be about politics these days and none of us are allowed to have any fun anymore.

I left the room when his clothes started to come off. Besides, the sound wasn't very good. A below average halftime show AFAIC.

Yeah, but Mahomes didn't throw a single INT in the Superbowl! ;) Anyway, congratulations on yet another Lombardi trophy.

I know what it feels like, at least in another sport, to be a Pats fan. I have a family connection with a NASCAR star. Have never met the guy, but my cousins grew up racing motorcycles (the family sport back a few decades ago, used to do it myself) with this guy in El Cajon, CA. They told me to watch out for him about 20 years ago, that he was getting into auto racing and could become something special. This was before he went to NASCAR, when we had no idea he'd become all time great Jimmie Johnson. He's like Tom Brady's NASCAR twin, separated at birth. A bland, too-good-looking-for-his-own-good Californian in his early 40s, with an obsession for physical fitness, a blonde professional model wife, and more championships than anyone in his era (7 for Johnson, versus, of course, 6 for Brady against 9 SB appearances--pretty much a wash between the two). They also have infuriated virtually everyone who's not a fan. Jimmie nearly wrecked NASCAR by being so blasted bloody good, seemingly getting all the breaks, and winning championships when it seemed impossible--ditto with Brady and the NFL, people who are not fans are just as sick of him always coming out on top. When I told a middle-aged woman at church, very nice lady, Sunday School teacher-type, that I was a big Jimmie fan, she said, with a sweet smile "I'd like to poison that man." You probably get some similar vibes from non-Pats fans.

For those who can't get enough, a new American football league starts playing on Saturday: https://aaf.com

And what does the `Alliance for American Football have going for it? Why will they survive when others such as the WFL, the USFL, and the XFL failed?

Funny you should mention the XFL. They're restarting next year, like a necromanced DegreeInfo thread: https://www.xfl.com

As for what any of them have going for them, good question. I suppose their market are people who don't want to stop watching American football in mid-winter? But it probably won't help for there to be two spring leagues next year, even if they're mostly in different cities from each other.

The AAF seems to have pretty good TV contracts. Their opening game will be on CBS, and many other games on the the CBSSN, TNT and the NFL Network. It's hard for people to develop any interest if they can't see the games.

On the other hand, I looked at the teams' rosters and didn't really recognize anyone (with a handful of exceptions).

The teams are Atlanta, Arizona, Birmingham, Salt Lake, San Diego, San Antonio, Memphis and Orlando.

San Diego is a natural. They just lost their Chargers and need a pro football replacement. So is San Antonio, which has been lusting after pro football for a while.

I happen to have this Saturday night off, and I'll be watching the AAF game on CBS. I'm also looking forward to the XFL's return, I actually liked the first incarnation, and was disappointed when they folded.

I admit I'm a football junkie, I'll watch any game I can, college (even D-1AA and D-II if that's all that's on) or professional, so this is great for me. Hopefully there are enough other football fanatics like me to sustain the AAF and XFL.

The closest AAF team to my American home would be Atlanta, which is a bridge far too far, but there's supposed to be an XFL team in D.C. next year, so that might be interesting. It might be this city's only chance this century for gridiron glory....

I still have a San Francisco Demons sweatshirt! Black, with a demon's face and the word "Demons" above it.

Count me in. My main love is Mountain West college football. (I used to be a WAC fan before that.) I like them more than the NFL. I almost died of pleasure when Boise State defeated Oklahoma in that epic Fiesta Bowl a few years ago. Now Fresno State is climbing the charts and turning into the next BCS-buster (if there was a BCS). San Diego State is pretty good too. Air Force, Wyoming, there are a bunch of them. Hawaii's due for a rebound.

I follow 1-AA too. Sacramento State and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo are my favorites there. And Eastern Washington of course, with their red-turf stadium that they call the "inferno". Gotta love that, along with their repeated 1-AA national championships.

There's just something about football. I'll watch it no matter who is playing, just for the pleasure of watching it.

A quick scan of Atlanta’s roster showed at least 2 former NFL players (Denard Robinson & Keith Towbridge) I recognized right away.

In addition to giving a second or third chance to former NFL’ers, the AAF & XFL could become unofficial post-college developmental leagues for the NFL.

Ah, the Demons. Only pro game I've ever seen: Demons vs. the Memphis Maniacs
(not Craniacs). Their skipper was, um, Jim Skipper.

Have at least one former student in the XFL. But have two former students in the NFL, so that's probably the more impressive of the two facts. I teach at a school where we're D1 and all, but part of the lower tier, we play teams like Central Michigan or La Tech in the weirdly-named bowl games that basically have nothing but the hard core boosters, relatives and frat brothers of the players in the stands, the type of game where the camera crew try to get as few shots of the overall stands as possible. We're not a BCS buster, but every year we play one of those elite, top 10 teams---and get busted.

It's getting brutal in Miami, but that's what happens when you mortgage your future and use a high 1st round pick on a WR in college who converted to QB halfway during his college career, and was only a WR because he got beaten out by two other guys who weren't even that good.
