I’m looking at Escambia County, FL as a retirement destination. It’s the westernmost county in the state, it borders Alabama on the Gulf of Mexico.

Deep red county, and for the price of a 4-bedroom mini-mansion there, I could barely afford a 1-bedroom condo around here.

It is an interesting conundrum for liberalism; they benefit by the most $$ through the the home ower tax deduction. My guess homelessness is higher in liberal areas.

What homeowner tax deduction are you referring to? I've owned two houses in Canada and never got a tax deduction for home ownership - aside from Ontario provincial tax credit for paying property taxes - but I still get much the same thing as a renter, for the same reason. Are you referring to deductible mortgage interest in the U.S.?

It is american thing - interest deduction up to million mortgage. The benefit goes predominantly to rich liberals.

The benefit goes to anyone who has a mortgage, which is hardly an ideologically specific status.

I'd like to see some data that supports this idea.

I have zero data. It is an observation that came out of searching for a retirement condo. The areas of least affordable seem to vote liberal(Canada and usa). If that observation holds true, then the higher ones mortgage is the more beneficial is the interest deduction(USA only)

I think that you're going to have to review that course on research methodology because I think you may be neglecting one or two other variables in that equation.

I am actually pretty good at multi-variate and regression analysis. I was not making a scientific claim. It was on observation based on my pocketbook, my current condo search, and some familiarity with voting patterns. My guess that having a bigger mortgage will mean receiving a bigger interest deduction.

Yes, that’s likely to be true. But your guess that this benefits only liberal democrats is kinda crazy.

A man from Texas who used to post here regularly bought a very nice house in Lemmon, South Dakota for under $25,000.
    Lemmon went 76% for Trump.
This clearly demonstrates a positive relationship between conservatism and affordable real estate.
Or perhaps between places where the average temperature is 17 below zero and affordable real estate.

True, and I can find places that are conservative that are expensive, like Calgary, as I mentioned in my opening post. And by the way, it is a lot colder in Calgary.

You're correct. You said "predominantly" I'm still unconvinced.

renters do not earn tax deductions on mortgage interest because they do not pay a mortgage, they pay rent.

Forgive me for saying it but it now appears that you made the original statement without any real knowledge that it was true and now, after the fact, you’re scrambling to find some shred of data that might suggest you were right.

Let it go. No one really cares.

That should be obvious. The owners make the deduction
