I agree. I would expect them to try to go with someone who the base would be "exciting" enough that the Trumpistas will show up anyway, without totally alienating the independents in the center on whom a general election swings. I'm not sure who that person could be, though.
And bearing in mind this presidential campaign being merely the latest Trump self-interested venture … could you consider Trump just another RINO too? He darn sure is not a Republican—his history easily reveals that…
When I say RINO in regards to the Republican establishment, I mean people like Paul Ryan, Mitch McConnell, and the rest who talk a good game, but have no stomach whatsoever to fight the Democrats on hot-button issues like the illegal alien invasion. Does that sound like Trump?
Are you certain that Trump is anymore a fighter /non-fighter than the examples you mention? What’s his measurable track record to date other than self-promotion /boastful talk? Heck Bruce … Trump’s no more a Republican or committed to its platform than I’m a Marxist. Trump is definitely a big time establishment member (of both the Democrat and Republican Party institutions—historically whatever it takes to advance his personal business interests). He has been pulling political strings (ancillary) in the background AND doing so for a very long time (crony capitalism). Don’t tell me he’s not both a politician and political insider simply because he’s never held public office. Trump is just not the commonly thought of orthodox model. P.S. I'm not discounting your disgust with the likes of Ryan and McConnell whatsoever. I fully concur. Trump's just not the solution IMO.
Much the like the mantra of girls out on a Saturday night, the voters are pissed off enough that they're not looking for Mister Right, but rather Mister Right Now. And who can blame them? The difference is that the Democrats seem content to go with a pathological liar who's the target of a criminal investigation by the FBI.
Has Paul been a bad boy? http://www.latimes.com/politics/la-na-pol-essential-washington-updates-special-counsel-in-russia-probe-accuses-1528160085-htmlstory.html
Now he can say bye-bye to that house-arrest deal https://www.cnbc.com/2018/06/08/special-counsel-robert-mueller-files-new-indictment-against-paul-manafort-nbc-news.html
Didn't you predict the demise of the Republican Party a few years ago? There is no way the nominee will be anyone other than Trump.
You're arguing with someone who left the building a long time ago about something that already happened.
On the sentencing ... https://www.cnn.com/2018/06/15/politics/judge-sends-paul-manafort-to-jail-pending-trial/index.html "I know a man who was never blue Now he lives in Cellblock Two I don't know just why he's blue Manafort, what'd you do? Manafort's back in jail again Manafort's back in jail again I don't know why, why he's blue Manafort, what'd you do? Went to the judge, dig man wail I'm here and I got Manafort's bail Judge said son, don't cha tell me no tale Manafort, he's gonna stay in jail Now, Manafort says man, you tried the best Man, I'm here gonna take a rest ..." If the Russia investigation is a witch hunt like Trump says, they seem to be catching a lot of witches.
"Manafort in trouble" is the title of this thread. Clearly he's in big legal trouble with x indictments and a mountain of evidence against him. But his biggest troubles might not be legal. The whole narrative surrounding Manafort is that he owed Russian oligarchs tens of millions of dollars and took this position with the Trump campaign as a way to somehow pay it all back. His biggest problem now is that he still owes all that money. Now until recently he was under house arrest and so relatively safe inside his own home. But now he's in prison and that's not the best place to try to hide from a bunch of Russian thugs. Manafort's biggest problem may not be legal. It might be simply staying alive.
From Mr. Trump's Twitter account: "Wow, what a tough sentence for Paul Manafort ... Didn’t know Manafort was the head of the Mob. ....Very unfair!"
To me, Manafort is just about the least sympathetic person on Earth. Current POTUS one again demonstrates his... "unique" judgement. Then again, after praising NK's leader specifically for his skill at keeping the rubes in line, how low can one go?
True - all of it. But as far as "least sympathetic on Earth" goes, I think I'd vote for Andrei Chikatilo ahead of Manafort. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrei_Chikatilo As someone about even with Manafort in the "least sympathetic" race, I might throw in Paul's own past client/protégé, Viktor Yanukovych. In case you haven't been tracking this, Paul Manafort's trial begins next week. https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/public-safety/special-counsel-has-nearly-500-pieces-of-evidence-for-paul-manafort-trial/2018/07/19/31686cb2-8b68-11e8-a345-a1bf7847b375_story.html?noredirect=on&utm_term=.60d4eff5f9df
