I signed up for the Summer 1 course: ITS834 Emerging Threats and Countermeasures. If you want more technical, I think Dakota State University's Doctor of Science might be more fit into the curriculum than the University of the Cumberlands' Ph.D in IT. But it is a Doctor of Science (DSc) instead of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D)

I looked into Dakota State's website, it looks like a great program, but it looks like it may take a lot longer to finish and would be ideal for a full-time, residential program. The University of Cumberlands has the accelerated 8 week semesters and doesn't have any residency weekends, where Dakota State has three. I'd like to finish the PhD within the next three years or so, if possible.

UofC's Cryptography class ended up being pretty decent, and three of my courses were finally successfully transferred from my masters, so things are rolling along. I'm take the next eight weeks off, and am signed up for Intro to Data Mining for Summer II, so I'm probably going drink the Cumberland kool-aid and hopefully stick around here until completion.

Where do you check to see if your request transfer was approved?

Go to https://selfserve.ucumberlands.edu/SelfService/Home.aspx click on the Grades tab and then click on the Unofficial Transcript link below the tabs. Your transcript should show the name of the University from which the courses were transferred and the course number and name of UC's course and the credits earned:

I don't have it. I just a message to Kami this afternoon, she said my transfer was approved. I should see them tomorrow. I hope that I could transfer over 18 credits leaving me only 13 courses to go.

Did the classes you transferred all match Cumberland's courses? I have an elective in my program that I'm hoping to fill and would like to get a few more credits transferred, e.g., I have some general programming courses that I would like to transfer.

Was any of the course you got transferred used for the degree? I had a second Master as Georgetown and some course was overlap with the specialization. I am wondering if I could request to transfering one of the those course. I just realized that the CISSP is only 4 credits for 2 courses, not 6 credits.

Not exactly, but 80% similar. The course at Nova Southeastern University are 4 credits per course while at UC only 3 credits.

Yes & No. The three courses I transferred towards the PhD at Cumberlands were used towards a masters at another school, but not towards a completed PhD. I have a masters degree from 20 years ago that I used for admission, but was able to transfer courses from another recent masters in IT towards the PhD. I would not be able to transfer any of my master courses towards another masters at Cumberlands, but I can transfer master credit towards the PhD, which was earned after the masters degree used to get accepted.

You should be able to use your Geeorgetown courses towards the PhD, since you already have a master's degree from Southern Methodist University which you would have used to get accepted to Cumberlands. The courses from Georgetown need to have been taken within six years.

Yeah that does not work, I graduated from Georgetown University 7 years ago. :)

It only takes a few seconds to fill out the transfer request ; it is probably worth a try, since it would save a couple months of work and a couple thousand dollars. Cumberlands may only look at the graduation date from Georgetown and the acceptance date at Cumberlands. When I originally enrolled I assumed I would get ~30 credits transferred, not just 7 of the 30, so I intend to keep bugging Cumberlands to get more credits transferred.

I got one too, a bright color. Not my style, so I am going to give it to my nephew.

Those are nicer than the shirts we got a few years ago. :)

    Hi Steve,

Can you please provide some feedback in regards to how your dissertation experience have been.

    Things like:
Can you get a masters during your PHD (since you are taking so many of the masters level courses)?
If you decide to take a break from your studies after your comprehensive exam, do you get a title such as PHD(abd), etc? or do they kick you out of the program (some colleges have a hard 7 year completion)
is the dissertation phase at your own pace or can I complete it in 2 years if I work on it fulltime?

Also, I cannot seem to find a link for "PhD IT Dissertation Handbook", do you know where this is hosted?

    Thank you

I am planing on taking the data mining class in Fall 1 semester, but did order the book already. Alot of chapters, but I have a feeling they might skip some in the 8 week period.

Honestly I've largely deferred it so far because of limited time.

I don't know. I had one already, and some people enter the program with two.

Not so far, and I really am taking my time.

I don't know about IT, but the leadership one is four semesters. If you take longer, that's okay.

I don't know whether that's on the web site, but if you ask the program administrator they should be able to send you that.

Has anyone taken ITS 632 – Introduction to Data Mining , ITS531 Business Intelligence, or ISOL 634 – Physical Security and can tell me how the class went?

I decided to change my Summer II registration from ITS 632 – Introduction to Data Mining and instead take ISOL 634 – Physical Security after reviewing ITS634's videos by Dr. Sherri Brinson where Dr. Brinson just reads through the book's, Introduction to Data Mining, slides.

I looked at ITS531 Business Intelligence, but it appeared Dr. Alex Yousefi also just reads through the Business Intelligence & Analytics slides, and requires a six to eight page paper each week on top of discussions and tests, which just didn't seem realistic for an eight week class. From what I could find neither of the classes seemed like there was a lot of teaching going on, but rather the instructors were just reading the provided slides and the videos were pre-recorded from an earlier class. Is this normal for online classes?

I haven't seen what ISOL 634 – Physical Security has to offer, but I ordered the book Effective Physical Security, Fifth Edition by Lawrence Fennelly and will hope for the best. I have yet to find any information on the instructor Ying Nathan Liu. It would be nice if the University would post the vitaes of the professors somewhere.
