Mrs. Jones, who lives in a state bordering the Atlantic ocean telephoned her sister, Mrs. Smith, who lives in a state bordering the Pacific ocean (but not Alaska or Hawaii). During the call, Mrs. Smith asked what time it was where Mrs.Jones lived, and was told. "That's the same time it is here," Mrs. Smith exclaimed. And she was correct. Explain..

You never said that it was an American state.

Good catch, Ted. If this is the key to the riddle, then the answer could be Chile (Pacific Ocean) and Guyana (Atlantic Ocean) during Standard Time. They are in the same time zone, but Guyana does not observe Daylight Saving Time.

Also, if I understand these confangled time zone maps correctly, it looks like parts of Brazil (Atlantic Ocean), share the same time zone as Chile.

EDIT: Oh, and here's my delayed observation that Mexico, Columbia and multiple Central American countries (states) themselves border both the Pacific and Atlantic. It took a while for that to hit me, even though in hindsight, it seems obvious.

    WAIT WAIT WAIT!

I think I actually have the answer, if we're talking about the states of the United States.

Parts of Texas (Atlantic Ocean) and parts of Oregon (Pacific Ocean) are both in the Mountain Time Zone.

    BOOM!

Nothing personal, but that observation is about as relevant as Kevin Spacey's reaction to Anthony Rapp's exposé. ("I don't remember doing it, but if I did it, I was drunk. Oh, BTW, I'm gay.")

Latest joke: Kevin Space killed someone with an accordion. His reaction to questions: "BTW, I'm an accordion player."

Best joke that seems like a Michael Jackson retread: Kevin Spacey has never won a race. Why? Because he likes to come in a little behind.

Best joke in general: Why does Kevin Spacey always lose at Hide & Seek? He comes out at a bad time.

(How's that for hijacking a thread?)

No one has taken me to task for being a day off. You're slipping, people, slipping.

    Let's try again.
Mrs. Jones lives in one of the 50 states of the United States of America that borders on the Atlantic Ocean (not the Gulf of Mexico). Somewhere between Maine and Florida, inclusive.
Mrs. Smith lives in one of the 50 states of the United States of America that borders on the Pacific Ocean (but not Hawaii or Alaska). Somewhere between Washington and California, inclusive.
Mrs. Jones telephones Mrs. Smith from her home and asks, "What time is it in your home, right now?"
Mrs. Smith is in her home and answers correctly.
Mrs. Jones says, "That's the same time it is in my home, right now." She is correct.
Explain. And if you'd like a hint, go here: time zone map - Google Search

    An alternative theory:

They both answer, “It’s dinner time.”

One family comes from the tradition in which the evening meal is dinner, while in the other family the afternoon meal is dinner and the evening meal is supper.

Thank you. Thank you very much.

    Daylight Saving Time?

If that isnt correct, then I still declare myself the winner because I thought all my answers were great ;)

The western Florida panhandle is in Central Time. An hour earlier is a notch of eastern Oregon, in Mountain Time. When Daylight Savings Time ends, that section of Florida is, for an hour, at the same time as the notch in Oregon.

Right you are. Well done. Now the only question is why that tiny bit of eastern Oregon dribbles over into the Mountain time zone.

Eastern Oregon has little in common with western Oregon and much in common with the adjacent Plains region. OTOH, parts of New York State will make you imagine you are in Indiana.
