FBI uncovered Russian bribery plot before Obama administration approved controversial nuclear deal with Moscow | TheHill

Before the Obama administration approved a controversial deal in 2010 giving Moscow control of a large swath of American uranium, the FBI had gathered substantial evidence that Russian nuclear industry officials were engaged in bribery, kickbacks, extortion and money laundering designed to grow Vladimir Putin’s atomic energy business inside the United States, according to government documents and interviews.

Apparently the FBI had evidence that the Russians were using bribes, kickbacks, threats and extortion to grow their footprint in the US nuclear industry. Yet Eric Holder's DOJ sat on the FBI investigation for years, never telling Congress or anyone outside the Obama administration and never filing charges, until eventually one figure in the case was belatedly charged with one count of money laundering and was sentenced to a few months.

While that was languishing in prosecutorial limbo, the United States had approved two deals that resulted in Rosatom (the Russian state atomic energy monopoly) acquiring an ownership stake in 20% of American uranium supplies. Meanwhile millions of dollars (according to some reports amounts up to $145 million) had been channeled by individuals with ties to either Uranium One or Rosatom into Clinton-associated entities.

Yes, The Russia Scandal Is Real

If there's any truth to what this seems to suggest, then it's easy to see why Hillary and her attorneys were so careful to scrub the hard-drive on her personal server so that its contents couldn't be reconstructed.

The Senate Judiciary Committee will reportedly be holding a hearing on this suddenly revived scandal tomorrow and Attorney General Jeff Sessions will reportedly be testifying.

This is not entirely true. The agenda for the meeting is the Committee's oversight of the Department of Justice. These meetings are routinely scheduled throughout the year and typically cover any number of topics. This meeting has not been convened, as you suggest, specifically to discuss the matter above although it won't be a surprise if it comes up for discussion. One would almost certainly expect that the ongoing Mueller investigation will also be discussed although Sessions, because he is recused from that investigation, may not have a lot to say about it. You can watch the whole thing if you like

The same as yours. You tried to steer this to Trump and I steered it back to the topic.

Just a few days ago the Senate Judiciary Committee reopened its investigation into the Uranium One mess and the Holder DOJ's possible role in it. Particularly whether most of the members of the 'CFIUS' committee (Committee on Foreign Investment in the US') that approved the uranium deals had even been informed about the bribery, kickbacks, threats and extortion that the FBI is said to have already had evidence of. (Congress never was.) We know that Hillary Clinton and Eric Holder sat on CFIUS and presumably they knew. (Holder was AG and oversaw the FBI (while Mueller was FBI director), and Hillary was Secretary of State while Clinton-related entities were simultaneously receiving huge sums of money from figures associated with the deal.)

There's lots more going on at the same time, such as Fusion GPS. If somebody wants to find foreign collusion in hopes of influencing a US election, that's perhaps where the smoking-gun is to be found. Fusion GPS' owners recently took the fifth before the Senate Intelligence Committee, refusing to answer questions about who had hired them and about what their sources were. (Media reports have linked the employers to never-Trumpers during the primaries, then the Clinton campaign during the general election, the sources indirectly to people in Moscow.)

So maybe there will be a new/re-opened investigation of the whole CFIUS thing. We'll see. As for the Fusion GPS piece. It would certainly be nice to know who paid for that investigation. My understanding is that when Mueller's people went to England (or wherever) to talk to Steele, he refused to disclose that information. It's not clear that he ever will. But maybe there's a work-around in there somewhere. It would be good to know.

I don't think I tried to steer anything to Trump. I think I was just posting about the agenda for the Committee meeting. Although it does seem that there is an "All roads lead to Trump" thing that happens. The good thing is that these committee meetings are public so in a few hours we'll all know exactly what was said.

Yeah, maybe it's different collusion? In any case, it seems clear that the investigation has gone way beyond the whole collusion question, although that is still at issue. I think that the tentacles of this investigation have wiggled into all sorts of dark places.

This is the story with no specifics regarding a government agency not controlled by Clinton (DoJ), with Clinton name pasted on it. And no actual wrongdoing even specified, let alone substantiated. No, this is non dishonest or "fake news" at all. :frown:

The substantial part states, in very general terms, that Russian government-controlled company engaged in kickback schemes and money laundering, as FBI apparently discovered. If this is the takeaway, I can save FBI money. Kickbacks and money laundering, or "otkat" and "raspil", are two pillars of Russian business. Especially in the likes of Rosatom - more government involvement, more money disappear in "raspil". Anywhere they operate on a significant scale, they engage in these two. One person known for doing business with Russians? Donald Trump.

But back to the Clintons: anyone got any proof any of the three of them personally benefited from donations to Clinton Foundation? Remember that the foundation publishes regular reports, and the Clintons provided their tax returns for many years. Well? We know, for example, than Trump got his charity to settle his legal issues and to bribe a Florida Attorney General.

I probably won't take the time to review Sessions entire testimony during today's committee hearing but I have had some indication that the CFIUS stuff didn't come up.
