As the article states, the law varies from state to state. Some places don't allow kids to get tattooed without parental permission and usually this means without the parent being present. If it's against the law in Massachusetts (for example) and they drive across the line into Rhode Island and a kid gets tattooed then is it somehow illegal? I don't know. I think most people would say that a kid needs to wait until they're at least 18 but I've seen younger kids (maybe 16) with little tattoos.

Thanks to laser removal, tattoos aren't the lifetime contract they used to be, but they still need to be taken very seriously. I saw 18-20 year-old men in the Army who got tattoos they later regretted, never mind a child this young.

I'm usually for government staying out of people's lives as much as possible, but this is a case where I think it's warranted to have a universal law that no one under 18 can get a tattoo, parental permission or not. If they really want one that bad, they can wait until they're 18, and they may well have changed their mind by then.

For full disclosure; I have one tattoo that I got when I was 29, and don't regret it for a second.

Ok, this quote / comment made me shake my head ". “I think it’s unfortunate in that the child actually wanted to get the tattoo,” said Fetner. “It’s not like the child was forced to get the tattoo; I think it just comes down to bad parenting.”

Ok, seriously people? Have you not seen every kid on the plant get temporary tattoos? How about tattoo sleeves, my son has one. People LOVE tattoos - a child wanting to get a tat is not bad parenting. (a child getting a tat is)

When I taught high school in the mid 1990s I had a 14 year old with his forearm covered in tattoos. Not what I'd call a sleeve, just a lot of non-professional looking tattoos. I asked him about it. He said they were gang tattoos. He was actually a pretty good student, bright and well behaved.

I'm taking this way off topic here, but I've experienced working with a student who was around the same age and was a member of the Crips. He, too, was a very intelligent kid, but unlike yours was not at all well behaved. I've tried to understand what makes young people join gangs, but it just never makes sense to me. This particular student could have easily been a straight A student and excelled in anything he wanted to do. For some reason, he wanted to spend his entire life stealing booze and beating up people for wearing red bandanas :dunno:
