I find it kind of weird. I know this person who posts under different accounts in another totally unrelated forum. They adopt different personas and post under different monikers. Why? Personality disorder or something? I don't know, it just seems kind of weird/creepy.
That's because it is. Also stupid. IP banning exists for just such people. We have spoken... Johann RedBoy28 Flash3000 Caporegime SweetCadillac5 JustKidding1990
We have at least one current member who was found to have more than one login/identity. Typically this is just a mistake and they are allowed to "pick one" and continue under that name while the other identity is banned. Occasionally a multiple login is discovered and after the correction is made they again create another identity. Those people quickly find themselves banned. In one such case a person was found to have started a thread under one name and then proceeded to have a spirited argument with himself under another identity. I will leave the "why" aspect to someone else to explain.:boggled:
I've been posting here off and on since the AED days. My old username was my real name. I used it because I foolishly believed people like Steve L. who insisted that people who didn't use their real names had no credibility. And at that point I was kind of thinking of transitioning into the DL field. But subsequently, I came to realize the hazards of posting under one's real name. The straw that broke the camel's back was the recent lawsuit against Rich. So I unilaterally created a second anonymous login. (If the moderators want to ban me, that's ok. I expect that Kizmet has already guessed who I am.) By this point I'm in my 60's, happily retired and have no interest in working in the DL field. And I'm more convinced that the quality of one's posts speak for themselves and that posts don't need a name attached to them to make them credible. What's written needs to stand on its own merits. I do post regularly to several other mostly philosophy-related discussion boards and use a third login there. I like that username and it's become my alter-ego so to speak. (It even has a little avatar.) But I don't think that creates any confusion since there doesn't seem to be any overlap in terms of participants between those boards and this one.
Once upon a time I had a dream that DI would enable avatars but over the years I've seen that dream trampled upon and mutilated so many times that I get a trauma reaction just thinking about it. Maybe I'll create an avatar and put it in my sig line.
I've done that before, but as part of a much wider ruse that spanned more than just a single thread on a single web forum. Why? Well, maybe I'll share my stories one day, but for now I'll let you keep a little mystery in your life
I have posted to this forum using 6 different accounts. 2 of those accounts had the name Maniac Craniac- the first having been deleted due to a server error. If you poke around in older threads, you might find posts by thAt account. The name is Maniac Craniac, but you can see that the account is inactive and does not have the Moderator title. Little known fact: the post count you see displayed for me is not entirely accurAte. It is partially an estimate of what my post count was before the deletion added to the number of posts I've made since. 1 account I can't say much about, but is related to moderator business. The 3 other accounts were from before I was made a Moderator. 1 was a meme; I forgot the password so I let it die. The other 2... yet another secret I'll have to reveal at the proper time.
I suspect you might be a member of this group: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/10,000_Maniacs Nice going! 35 years and still rockin'! 9,994 accounts to go, I guess. Doubtless, we'll be hearing from you. Are you Natalie Merchant by any chance? She was one of 'em. J.
