Why are journalists who write about education so clueless? Has this person never heard of Coursera, edX, Khan Academy, Lynda.com, and The Great Courses?
For the same reason journalists who write about everything else are so clueless. Think about it, have you ever heard a journalist report satisfactorily on any subject in which you were an expert? Because they're no more knowledgeable on subjects where you are not an expert!
There are actually some pretty good criminal justice journalists out there. A lot of political stories have been broken by journalists, but that's in the realm of current events where they excel.
I think the point of the article is that inside large organizations knowledge is isolated to individuals and finding and accessing that knowledge is difficult. We have this challenge at my company and it hasn't been solved by pluralsight courses. Those courses are general. The knowledge of the industry we are in, how we bring products to market, and how our systems and people work operationally is locked in the minds of a few SMEs. It makes scaling up difficult.
