So it appears that ACDE is an organization of DL schools in Africa. At this point I am unfamiliar with most of these schools and so I just want to say that membership in this organization does not necessarily confer legitimacy.

Kizmet - let me set your mind at ease, regarding at least one institution - The Open University of Zimbabwe. From the site:

"ZOU hosted the 10th Graduation Ceremony on 30 November 2012 where 1 568 graduands were capped by the Chancellor of the University, His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Cde. Robert Gabriel Mugabe."

Wow - degrees from Robert Mugabe himself! How legit can it get...

Imagine what a rush they'd have, if they re-named the school after its Chancellor. "Robert Mugabe University."

I know enough about the South African schools to b able to recommend any of them. And the Open U (UK) of course is quite good. Some of the others . . . I've heard their names but don't know much about them. I have some concerns about the Nigerian schools, despite my friend the Prince, just because there seems to be some disarray in general and yeah, that whole Mugabe thing too. I've sprinted through some of the sites and some are decent, some not. Egerton, Moi, Lukasa look like the have some promise. I have not yet gotten to Plasma University.

I did a little bit of research on one of the Universities on ACDE with an ecampus, Maseno. It is legitimate government. It fees are listed in $US and a copy of your passport is requirement of the application. I am guessing international students are welcome. Apparently it is one of the best in Kenya.

At UK universities, and I presume at universities in countries like Zimbabwe that inherited the UK system, "Chancellor" is an honorary position, and it's the Vice-Chancellor who actually runs things. For example, for a while Sir Patrick Stewart (the actor who played Captain Picard and Professor X) was the Chancellor of the University of Huddersfield in the UK.

Just out of curiosity, I did. Looks 100% legit, private, not-for-profit in Somalia. Despite Somalia's perennial ongoing civil war, it seems to be making progress. I Google-translated one of the picture captions that was in Somali - turned out to be students engaged in drought-relief work. The school is fairly new, has 5 campuses, a serious building program underway and about 2,500 graduates, so far - about 1900 of them in the past year. No mention of distance education I could find. That doesn't mean there isn't any, of course.

From the ACDE, Kenyatta University is offering many programmes online. The fees for non-east Africans is about 20% more but still very inexpensive. There may also be a taught Phd in business.

Forgive me for being stuck on this tread. This university is offering many
PhDs by distance and open learning - less than us$5k - foreigners welcome.

It could be a diamond in the rough. There's literally zero information about the specific programs (did I miss it?).Also, be sure about the language of instruction.

There is nothing written on the university's site acknowledging these accreditations.

I checked the AACSB site This school is not listed - as either a member or an AACSB accredited school. Some Kenyan schools are - not this one. See for yourself:

    https://www.aacsb.net/eweb/DynamicPage.aspx?Site=AACSB&WebKey=CADEF77A-6573-49BB-9BA2-CE21EC93841E

Did not find it listed on AACN site either. See here: https://www.aacn.nche.edu/about-aacn/member-schools

    That's enough - I'm done, here.

Kenyatta University offers a PHD in Buisness. Does anyone know if the program can be completed online? And how much the entire program cost in US? And upon completion could I call myself "Dr."?

For the last question, of course, why wouldn't you?

For the other questions, I'd ask the graduate school directly, their email addresses are: [email protected], [email protected], and [email protected]

For non-Kenyans, the program costs around 232,800 Kenyan shillings per year. That's $2,257.94 US. 4-6 years for p/t students - NO mention of distance, although there IS DL for MBA. Leads me to believe maybe no DL for Doctorate. Sure, you can call yourself Dr., but I don't know about the amount of recognition here. Their business programs are definitely not AACSB accredited; they're not even members. Don't see any other programmatic accreditation either. Maybe they've got cards they're not showing...

As Steve said, best to ask the school about distance ed. possibility - and everything else.
