Touro College v. Novus Law: It would be funny if it wasn't so sad. Student Wastes Time Pursuing Law Degree He Was Ineligible To Receive, Tries To Sue School, Fails Miserably | Above the Law
I think it is pretty funny, especially that Touro claims that Novus is a diploma mill, yet one of their graduates/victims came very close to being awarded a LL.M. degree from Touro.
He applied for a program that he had to know he wasn't eligible for. He was trying to do one of those life hacks to a law license that we talk about here periodically. He claims he was going to be eligible to take the D.C. bar exam once he earned his LLM. Specifically, from the DC Bar we see: The problem (one of many) is that he applied to an LLM for foreign law graduates to try to sneak through the back door to bar admission in DC. Of course, the bigger issue is that Touro let him begin classes without reviewing his transcripts. I'm not saying it's not the student's fault. He played a dangerous (and expensive) game and lost. Shame on him. But Touro, law school rankings aside, is an accredited institution and part of a larger network of low tier but fully accredited schools. Reviewing transcripts for admission to an LLM program should be pretty well understood. It sounds like they are so eager to rush people through the front door and into overwhelming student loan debt that they aren't even pretending to do any due diligence. Anyone else think it would have just been easier to go to an accredited law school?
Exactly. I mean I could understand if he was allowed to enroll and maybe even get into his first semester before they did a full eval; More than a few months would be odd, but until the end of a program is a little ridiculous. Still in the end it is his fault, he knew what he was trying to do and frankly it was bound to blow up sooner or later
