I am very happy that all my achievements qualified me for an accredited honorary doctorate from a states university (not naming them here), just that I do not have enough contributions to the university yet.

Lol. It seemed like Singapore politicians also have lots of contributions to many universities, including Singapore universities. Therefore, since I am qualified for an accredited honorary doctorate, I think I will go and donate to Universal Life Church and get a Honorary doctorate (D. D.) in return. D. D. has a history of being issued by church.

I guess Singapore Ministry of Manpower will have no issues with it after their recent clarifications on degree mill, and unaccredited SPU is completely fine for employment at IDA, a Singapore Government Agency.

Wee, doctor title, here I come...

So a fake degree you paid for and it's called an honorary doctorate. If it was legit saying what school it's from wouldn't be an issue since well known schools do give those out.

Hi, won't say out bcuz it is like saying donating to get the doctorate from legitimate university, after qualifying with experiences, accomplishments and degrees. I may go back get one in future after I get my PhD? Since it is a norm for faculty to compete with these honorary degrees also :p.

Getting a honorary degree from Universal Life Church is unaccredited (don't think they are) but legal to a certain extent. Then the letter for qualification of honorary doctorate from the accredited university kind of overwrite this issues as they are both honorary doctorates level, though different specialization.

I am mentioning about the issues of Singapore Ministry of Manpower (MOM) in their "clarifications" of degree mill inorder to moderate the SPU degree saga here. The SPU saga involves an Indian talent working in the govt agency IDA with SPU degree, which many citizens here are being rejected of the position. I think degreeinfo has thread about this issue too. I actually have two legitimate masters degree, what is of irony is that I have an Indian IGNOU MBA degree and the Indian actually get an unaccredited SPU degree, instead of an accredited mba from India. I applied to IDA before with such qualifications, years of experiences and international awards, I am also rejected. Seemed like they prefer degree mill over accredited degrees. So, I am writing a sarcasm over it, "teaching" her that instead of spending so much money on SPU degree, you must as well just get a doctorate from Universal Life Church, higher level, isn't it.

The govt should have followed canada model, by introducing WES type of degree checking and evaluation on the degrees submitted by foreign talents, instead of trying to cover it up. IDA could also have worked with the govt on this issue by offering technologies such as consolidated search for accredited degrees. None of anything satisfactory was done to address the issues properly, instead, focusing on covering up everything with ambiguity degrees classification.

This will makes many graduates from Singapore university, local or foreigners, asking themselves why they even worked so hard on an accredited degree here? Since the MOM says it is ok for SPU degree to work in IDA, why not just earn enough experiences and buy a degree from SPU. IDA is a govt representative in IT here in Singapore.

Years ago I bought a ULC "doctorate."

Let's just clarify, "churches" have not historically awarded the D.D. That particular degree was historically awarded by universities (just like all other degrees) though by universities affiliated or founded upon the principles of a church.

I recently dug mine up from storage and have it sitting "prominently" on the bookcase in my office, upside down, so people acknowledge it as the gag it is.

    Best of luck there, "Doctor."

Who cares about accreditation for an honorary degree? You are either honored because of the reason it was awarded and who awarded it or you are not.

Well, you should care depending upon how you want to "use" said degree. If you're just going to hang the certificate on your wall then no, it doesn't really matter.

If you're putting it on your resume then yes it does matter.

And if you're paying for it, it isn't an "honorary degree" it's a diploma you bought from a mill.

Well, early universities derived their power to grant degrees (licentia docendi) from the Church (meaning the Catholic Church), so Lagu88 is technically correct, sort of.

These days I think you need to move to Somalia to become a real pirate that is unless pirating stuff on the interwebs counts.

If you read carefully from websites like Wikipedia , honorary doctorates could be conferred to donorseven from prestigious university. Yes, for my case, you need to qualify for it first with your credentials, then contributes something enough to the university.

Church awarded certificates in religion has been debatable, similar to a honorary doctorate awarded by church. The state practice freedom of religion, n there are legal issues on ulc but they won the case for their doctor of divinity.

Yes, if u want the real degree, u can get an accredited doctorate in theorology from accredited university like uni of south Africa. I won't even bother for a D. D. in the first place if I want the knowledge. The honorary doctorate in divinity issued from churches have been declining due to the above issue, but many people are buying it n they have some sort of legal to use it.

Given my case, I am already qualified for a honorary doctorate from accredited university but did not "contribute" enough, I see no reason why I cannot donate to a church n get one honorary doctorate on top of it. All I have to do is put them under honors n awards in my resume. With my two masters n graduate diploma, n my contributions with publications n patents, the graduate credits amount can already reach 60 after a master degree, qualifying for a professional doctorate. This is why I am qualified for the honorary doctorate.

Still, the semantics from the previous post is to file a sarcasm to the Singapore mom in degree clarifications after spu saga, let's not move away from the focus. The mom says the spu is somehow an unaccredited degree since they did not impose any penalty on the ida employee. A check on spu website, there don't seemed to hv any classes or courses, seemed like paying to buy the degree, to me, it is completely a degree mill, like what u said. It is not even a honorary degree that is issued with specialisations in vague subject like divinity, metaphysics. Also, she cannot even argued that her contributions n experiences is qualified for any sort of honorary "master" degree from accredited university.

Hence, since Singapore Ministry of Manpower is fine with it, I see no reasons they can impose any penalty on my case, even if I put it in the education section of my resume for use in Singapore, else, that will be double standard. Yup, purchase a master degree from spu, haha, come on, just donate to a church n get your honorary doctorate n call unself rev. Dr. after tat (sarcasm, of course) since u hv the intentions to cheat in the first place.

Does an honorary DD from ULC qualify you to do anything? Other than move to Appalachia and set up your own little wedding chapel beside the road?

Well, don't even plan to use it, so put on Honor and Awards section. Just that in my country, when people argue lose already like to use education, experience or seniority to press on the person. The arbitrary and legal to a certain extent "Dr" can come in handy under these type of situation. Ya, technically, you all are right that degree may not be that important, but here very different.

Whatever. If it's on your resume then you're pretending this is something real when you know that it isn't.

Whatever, it is always better to donate to a church and they give you arr... you know honorary degree in some vague major than you directly buy a MBA degree from mill university like SPU. At least donate to church is like doing some form charity or good deeds. Buying a degree from mill university... hmm.. arr...

Anyway, according to the federal law:

"The Federal Court case that we had, where the state said that we could not give this degree, we appealed it in Federal Court. Judge Battin’s decision in the Federal Court said that we have a right to give this Doctor of Divinity degree. " at Doctor of Divinity - Get Ordained - Become a Minister - ULC

    and

"The Court's conclusion that the issuance of Honorary Doctor of Divinity certificates is not violative of the California Education Code and therefore public policy is supported by a reading of Section 20920" at https://scholar.google.com/scholar_case?case=12761954949750525041 I printed it in case.

Lol... Anyway, I qualified for Honorary Doctorate at an accredited university with black and white also, just that they need many "contributions" also. So, how do you justify ""honorary doctorate" that is purchased through "donations" from a school that can't be named. It's a joke." - Actually I am curious how many honorary doctorates those celebrities get out there are actually some sort of contributions one.

Haha, still better then buying MBA degree from SPU. Why bother buying from SPU leh, just donate to church and call yourself
"doctor" (sarcasm). Funny ah, all challenged me like this, I only put them, you know, in honors and awards section which is near the end of my resume (may even remove it, hee hee), not even in education section. That IDA girl buy SPU MBA degree and put it on education section of her resume and applied for a job at IDA with it, yet nobody comment on it?
