Alternative to Liberty

Hi all, I'm hoping to finish my Master of Social Work degree sometime next year. I've been looking at some possibilities for Doctoral degrees after that. I was interested in the Liberty Doctor of Education in Marriage and Family counseling. However after seeing the news recently I have serious reservations. I don't' want to get into a political discussion, but a school that formally supports a person like Donald Trump becomes less desirable to me. I understand there a Christian college but they may be to far askew of my own views.
Are there any alternatives out there for online doctoral degrees in Marriage and family counseling or even social work. The Walden DSW looks interesting but might be a bit to pricey. Thank you.

Perhaps it would be better if you did some leg work on this question yourself and then posed questions about those alternatives to the board. Otherwise, you're just sending people out to fish for you without really knowing what you need and desire.

OK so here's a few things. You haven't said why you want a doctoral degree so that affects recommendations. You said Walden is too expensive but you haven't said what you can afford. You haven't said anything about your experience and that might matter because some PhD programs might not accept you since the ink wouldn't even be dry on your Masters diploma. As Rich suggested, we have multiple threads on PhD programs in therapy stuff so maybe you can sift through the archives because these programs don't change much. As for social work, here's another option

I'd just get the degree. I debated on going to Liberty for a couple of years. I finally decided to put my personal feelings about Jr. and Sr. to the side and get it done.

Liberty has a variety of guest speakers, including conservative, liberal, Trumpian, etc. Trump giving a speech at the school doesn't exactly mean the school "formally supports" the guy, as you say.

Its president sure does, which is close enough for most people: Evangelical leader Jerry Falwell Jr. endorses Trump

Okay, I was unaware of that. I'm no Trump fan, but I still wouldn't cross a school off my list because of a presidential endorsement. Seems silly to me.

Respectfully, are you REALLY going to call around to all prospective colleges and poll their administration and ask who they're voting for?

    Maybe a surveymonkey thing?:phone:

I take your point. On the other hand, if you have to poll them to find out where they stand you might assume their choice will only bear so much relationship to the way they run their school. That's different from it being so integral to the school's leader's worldview that their endorsement is reported on in the Washington Post.

The political and religious views of the leadership is closely-tied to how Liberty is run. The founder was a segregationist and a bigot in modern times. His son is endorsing a bigot or someone pretending to be one for votes. I can completely understand why someone wouldn't want to give them his or her money.

The school doesn't support Donald. Below is the official statement from the school about Jerry endorsing Trump.

"Liberty University does not support or oppose candidates for public office. Jerry Falwell Jr.'s endorsement of Donald Trump is a personal endorsement, in his individual capacity as a citizen and not as President of Liberty University. The University is not commenting on this and is referring all comments and inquiries regarding the endorsement to his family, outside the operations of the University."

This is true, but only because the university's tax status precludes open support.

We can assume that or anything else as to the why but that's LU's statement on it and as far as I'm concerned it's pretty straight forward. It's not like the LU board voted on this and agreed to support a candidate, the president did this all on his own. The president was bound to support someone personally and it would of been news either way. Imagine if he came out and said he supported Hillary or Sanders. The news would of exploded and the interwebz would of broke.

I'm certainly not defending Falwell, but the man has been in the grave since 2007. He is no longer relevant.

If his son is not much different, then he is relevant. But, the reason why I brought him up is because Liberty is a reflection of his beliefs whether or not you agree with them. He founded the university, and it hasn't changed much since he died. Considering that there are universities that are over 100 years old and far removed from the influence of their founders, nine years is not a long time. Liberty is a relatively young school and has spent most of its history under the influence of its founder.
