    Hi Guys,

I am wondering if someone can suggest me a PHD / DBA / Doctorate without oral defense.

I am looking for a recognized Institution in Europe or in the USA.

    Thanks.

Some doctoral programs require a sort of "project" as opposed to a dissertation but I don't know any that allow you to simply hand it in and then walk away with your degree. I believe that all legitimate doctoral program will require you to minimally explain/answer questions about your work. Maybe someone else knows of a program with no such requirement but I've never heard of one.

    Hello all,

Terminology may be confusing at times, but these terms i.e. project vs. dissertation (or thesis in the UK) are not always "one or another" type alternatives. In the UK for example, where I am studying for a DBA (mostly at a distance), a doctoral candidate carries out a research project, regardless of the title of the degree (PhD, DBA, DProf, etc.), for which the main written outcome would be the doctoral thesis.

As for the oral examination, I also think that almost all legitimate programmes would seek some kind of oral examination, even if that may be undertaken via Skype -or any other app like that- in some cases.

What an odd distinction being made by the OP. And without any explanation as to why.

Of course, I made sure I took one without sour cream. I mean sure, I wanted the degree, but who needs all those extra calories?

If you think your dissertation is going to be such a piece of crap that you're unwilling to defend it, then I suggest that you forget about a doctoral degree.

Right. Because the key is to know it's a piece of crap and successfully defend it anyway.

Most schools in Australia do not require oral defense but just examination. The reason is that Australia is a very large country and it is not easy to flight professors around to attend thesis defenses.

That's interesting. Most schools we hear about will either require the student come to campus or have some sort of webcam/skype setup for the defense process. It's unusual in today's tech world that they would simply abandon the practice altogether.

Paradoxically, I found (at Leicester) both useless and vital simultaneously. Useless because the oral exam part lasted about 5 minutes. I got peppered with a few questions, then the external examiner said, "okay, you know your stuff and your research. Now, tell us what's really happening with the CLO? (My topic was the chief learning officer.) That led to me blurting out my answer and him saying, "That's it! Write THAT!" That led to a 45-minute exploration, followed by 6 more months of analysis and another dive back into the literature. The result was a thesis I am proud of and a real new contribution to both the HRD scholarship and in applying a sociological epistemology (Strong Stucturation) to career development theory that could be used to study other career paths. Yeah, I'm glad for it.

"The submitted dissertation is assessed by a committee of examiners, and is then typically defended by the candidate during an oral examination (viva in the UK and India) by the committee."
