Just wondering, is anyone familiar with the quality of Old Dominion's English PhD Program? I think the program is a little on the expensive side at ~$24,000, but how good is the school and the program? Anyone taken a class there? I've heard the school mentioned on this forum several times, although I never heard much about whether it was good school. Honestly, I know there is a glut of English PhDs out there, so I would really think twice about starting this, but I am curious nonetheless. I'm brainstorming for the future, and I'm considering my options.

I'm not familiar with the English program, but the reputation/legitimacy of ODU itself is beyond reproach. Certainly not a Public Ivy, but it has a good reputation nationally, and is very highly thought of in the Virginia area (I went to high school in VA).

Well, it's not like there are a plethora of options fort persons seeking a DL PhD in English.

Well, I wouldn't say very highly -- by Virginia standards, it's a middle of the road public university. But there's nothing wrong with them either, and as Ted notes there's not a lot of choice out there for those who want a PhD in English by distance, so such people should probably be glad this is available.

Well, it's good to know that ODU has a good rep. I figured as much. I will keep asking around for details about the program. Still, I figure many in here would advise again an English Ph.D.? I've read countless articles that advise against obtaining one, mostly from bitter liberal arts college instructors that failed to get tenure. But, in the end, is the degree still worth it? Still have value? How would it stack up to say a Ed.D. or Ph.D. in education?

It might depend on how you plan to use the degree. It also might depend on the nature of your dissertation. One thing you can do, especially if you hope to teach on the college level, is to look at the staff who are teaching in places you might like to teach. What degrees do they have? Any EdDs in the bunch? That'll give you a clue as to how you might best proceed.
