No wonder! Look at the pay scale! From $236 US (monthly?) to a max of $ 1,017 for full professors..... http://www.academics-india.com/Teacher-payscale.pdf

I think this is sad, in a country where entry to the burgeoning middle class (200 million) starts at something just above $10,000 US per year. Perhaps those underpaid professors might do well to consider a second career in programming, for Western businesses that outsource this job to India. No wonder the State universities are said, in Kizmet's cited article, to have deteriorated so far in quality that they are turning out "an army of unemployables."

Yep -it's the money -and opportunity. Another article: https://www.insidehighered.com/blogs/the_world_view/who_is_teaching_in_india_s_universities

    A quote:

"Why are there staff shortages? The answer is simple. While academic salaries in India are not bad in terms of the emerging Indian middle class, young well-educated Indians have many more opportunities in the growing technology, service and other sectors of the economy, and thus are not attracted to academe. Large numbers of talented students still pursue degrees abroad, and many do not return. For example, a majority of IIT graduates depart immediately for overseas study upon receiving their degrees, and a high percentage of this particularly talented group of individuals do not return. Of those who do, they are in high demand in the private sector and rarely take up teaching appointments."

"Large numbers of talented students still pursue degrees abroad..." Do they ever! It's Saturday at this Canadian College... not that crowded. I've seen maybe 60 people here, while getting down the hall. 55+ were Indian students!

PS. "While academic salaries in India are not bad in terms of the emerging Indian middle class..." As I've said, I have some issues with that statement.

Academic salaries are not very great in India. That's why most grads prefer an Industry or an IT profession over an academic one.
I know of some in academic field that use their academic position merely as a front-end to their (more lucrative) private tutions.
