Excellent forum and thank you for any replies.

I'm looking for online schools that offer teacher certification. There are some threads asking specifically for US certification. However, I'm open to studying online from other countries as well.

I've traveled a lot overseas and would like to work at an international school. After talking with several schools they need applicants to have teacher certification and prefer it to be from a Western country.

I was also told by one very honest principal that the more 'prestigious' the school the better (to please parents).

As I am based in Taiwan, I would like the program to be totally online if possible.

Can anyone recommend any programs? The costs are not as important as it being online and a good learning experience.

    Thank you.

By totally online, I hope you don't mean "with no physical-classroom student teaching experience." As a rule, teacher certification in Western countries requires "student teaching" experience assisting and leading real classroom work under supervision for an extended period of time. Could you student-teach exclusively online? Well, there is a (relatively small) market in online K-12 schools. But this doesn't mean that it's possible to meet student teaching requirements through such programs exclusively. Performance standards for certifying teachers to teach in a physical classroom environment – your goal here – are typically going to require prospective teachers to lead groups of kids in a physical classroom environment. Would you want it any other way? More in a previous DI thread.

In the U.S., various "alternative certification" (alternate route to teacher certification) programs turn out teachers more quickly than traditional teacher certification programs. These typically involve a shorter teacher prep*course, and this be online, then a temporary certification or near-certification that can be converted to full certification after successful classroom teaching for a certain amount of time (and possibly other requirements like a master's degree). These programs are mainly used to prepare teachers for high-need areas, such as inner-city and rural. This is a very different hiring market from the international private schools you describe, that value their teachers being trained at prestigious institutions.

I am currently in discussions with:

    TEACH-NOW

It is completely online and it's great for us international teachers (I'm a teacher in Hanoi, Vietnam) because a licensed teacher from the school you're teaching at can meet the three month mentor requirement. I've also looked at other online certifications, like Teacher Ready, but they require additional paper work, like fingerprinting and, as you know, this type of paper work can be tough to get (there's only one place in Vietnam that does fingerprinting and I would have to fly there to get it...).

Does TEACH-NOW have any solutions for international teachers who don't have access to a US-accredited school? That only works if one already can make an arrangement with an international school for the clinical parts, right?

It would be preferable but if this type of program doesn't exist one has to be flexible, right? Actually I have over a decade of formal teaching experience (with my undergrad and Masters Degrees) and am looking a mid-career change of pace. This change of pace/job will require certification that can lead to a license to teach in a Western country elementary or high school.

    Let's change my initial post.

I'm looking for an online program that leads to teacher certification. Of course, classroom work can be done, but there may be programs where spend a few months at the end of the program rather than a couple hours/week with I am unable to do.

Any suggestions or recommendations are appreciated.

    I second this question.
