So I curious to see what other hobbies some of you have in order to decompress and get your mind off your educational goals. I have two hobbies; DIY Home Improvement projects and Scuba Diving. I just finished putting up a split rail fence and installing an irrigation system for my yard. I don't scuba dive as much as I used to, my last dive was off the Caribbean island of Turks & Caicos. My buddy in Texas keeps asking me to schedule a trip to dive in the gulf of Mexico, but with with work and school I'm having trouble finding enough time to go.
My hobby is to spread myself out so thin with various interests that I never become good at anything. I think I've turned it into an art form, actually. You can add chess, mental calculation, weight lifting, lock picking, harmonica playing, jogging, cooking, salsa dancing, and song writing to the much longer complete list of things for which I have exceedingly high interest but embarrassingly little skill.
Although I don't hunt or fish, I do love to shoot firearms. I have a Glock (Model 21) 45 Caliber handgun, as well as a Mossberg Maverick (Model 88) 12 gauge tactical shotgun (pistol grip). Every few months I visit a local shooting range, which allows for a time to "decompress," as well as keep my shooting skills up to par. Also love to hike.
Video editing I love to take pictures and video, and edit them, but NOT for hire! I am very aware this would stop being fun if I had to depend on it to make a living.
Mostly reading. It doesn't take much to entertain me anymore. The older I get the more boring my life becomes. In 10 more years I'll probably be going to bed at 6pm, wearing white socks with shorts, and saying things like "get off my lawn."
I used to run and diving and work was what I did between vacations, then I worked and went to school to finish that damn PhD, now I work and work and work....and work.....
You gotta make time brother. I have to make time. I did not get to run this afternoon, but I got something in this morning. I run at least 5 miles in the morning to set my day.
For real?! I used to run 8 miles 4x/week until it started wearing on my knees. I now limit myself to running 5 miles twice per week and took up swimming. If I did it 5 miles per day, I wouldn't last very long at all before I ran out of knee to grind.
My hobby is book collecting. Always remember and never forget: Money can't buy happiness, but it can buy books and that's sort of the same thing.
“Money, if it does not bring you happiness, will at least help you be miserable in comfort.” — Helen Gurley Brown
Cycling Bicycle racing - participating, watching on TV*, and helping out at races. Hiking Travel Attending lectures (mostly geographical history, politics and current affairs) *Currently I'm in heaven - Giro (beIN) in the AM and Tour of California (NBCS) in the PM.
Playing harmonica, guitar, accordion, mountain dulcimer, concertina. Just bought an electronic keyboard. Computer programming at the "hobby" level - I'd be hopeless if I tried to earn a living at it. Photography. Writing stories. Lazy, leisurely learning of languages. Right now, I'm exploring Polish. I'm 71 and I walk a lot. I was always too darn lazy to run. I thank my Maker daily for my great health. I must be doing something right. I know He is. Johann
Breathing. I've thought of giving it up once or twice... Ba-dum-dum. :haha: Seriously though, I enjoy playing bass guitar (I used to play in bands, back when I was cool(er)). I've been trying to learn Dutch for the past 3 years, but I haven't gotten very far to date.
