University of the Cumberlands EdD: Yeah, I enrolled

SPSS is the standard, of course, but I never got into it. At the time I did my quantitative dissertation, SPSS was both expensive and clunky to use (it was DOS-based back then). Instead, I used a program called GB-Stat. (This was in the early 1990's and again in 2002 on both sides of my enrollment.) SPSS seems to be the surviving winner.

Just for fun, on the qualitative side, I used nVIVO to analyze my data. I just don't know how people did--and still do--it by hand. All that cutting up of printed text and coding with colored markers...yeesh!

For managing the bibliography, I used Perrla for both dissertations, but I understand Endnote is the way to go these days.

No matter what, all of this stuff is a bit harder to use than it should be. Unlike mainstream software, which has to be easy to use or people won't buy it, these niche products put a lot more on the user.

 

So in general, do you all believe that a person with 18 hours of statistics courses instead of mathematics should be able to teach mathematics at the community college (developmental to sophomore level)? Which would be better: mathematics education or statistics hours?

The statistics courses would transfer as an emphasis into the Masters in Math: Applied Stat emphasis program at the university where it is offered.

 

Our college has told math instructors that mathematics education courses would not count towards the 18 hours requirement. That goes for all subjects. Of course, our college's interpretation of things is not the end all, be all.

As of today, I have been accepted into the PhD in leadership program at the University of the Cumberlands!!

Like many people here, I have been in several doctoral programs over the years, but this one feels different. During the Skype interview today, I was discussing possible research/dissertation ideas with the program director for leadership studies. Doctoral programs I have been in in the past never discussed research ideas up front. I have a good feeling about this program.

Thank you to all who have posted your experiences about UC. Steve first told me about the program in 2014, but I held out to see how the program would fare down the road. Two years later and the program has nothing but rave reviews, so I applied and was accepted!

Thanks Steve and Bruce! The admissions process was the most involved of all the doctoral programs I have been in in the past. The last step was the interview with the program director. I'm glad to have made it through the process!

 

Like many others, yesterday I was accepted to UC. I am excited to begin this fall. As an additional perk, UC is willing to accept the 18 units from my first master's degree. Also, it was a pleasure speaking to Dr. Vann. I "clicked" very well with him and cannot wait to have him as an instructor in the future. This is definitely one of the best decisions I have made in my higher education career.
