Nope not a million. I did get an answer though. It seems $55k to $65k is the range for a course mentor. I believe student mentor is a little less. They both require masters degrees and both are considered faculty.

Isn't the typical workload of a student mentor 100 students? And they're required to contact them all once per week? As well as follow-up if the student is having issues?

What other work would they do to supplement their income?

Or, turned another way, would I need to do other work to supplement my income if I didn't have to drive to work five days a week? Could I go on a trip and still keep in contact with the mentees (made that one up)?

If you're the gregarious type, this would be easy cash.

I just wonder about ... performance metrics. Are the mentors held responsible for keeping students enrolled and active in their courses? How is their performance evaluated? Student feedback?

From my research ... A student mentor has 80-100 students and must contact them every two weeks preferably by phone. So 50 calls a week maybe. Usually calls are on a recurring schedule but could be mornings, evenings or weekends. As long as you are accessible by phone and have Internet access I imagine you could be anywhere in the world.

That's all I know. I am trying to get answers as well.

Thanks for the info Jam937, this is good stuff. I will take a look at their website and see if they have any positions open for writing faculty/mentor.

From discussions with my own WGU Student Mentor and the job postings available online I think you will be hard pressed to find employment as a Course Mentor with less than a Doctorate in the subject. WGU seems to feel this is a way to deflect any criticism of their model. Even teaching at the undergrad level they want a PhD https://wgu-openhire.silkroad.com/epostings/index.cfm?fuseaction=app.jobinfo&jobid=1863&source=ONLINE&JobOwner=992385&company_id=16417&version=1&byBusinessUnit=&bycountry=&bystate=&byRegion=&bylocation=&keywords=&byCat=&proximityCountry=&postalCode=&radiusDistance=&isKilometers=&tosearch=no

Student Mentor is a different bird, I think you could pull that off with a Masters. But student Mentors are more like secretaries/cheerleaders...not the job I think of when pondering employment as an adjunct or in higher education.

They do want PhD's for course mentors. One area where they allow masters is IT as it's very hard to find them.

From what I have researched on GlassDoor reading employee reviews and interview details, they offer a starting salary of $42k / year to all student mentors. I am in WGU's MS IT Network Mgmt program and I agree, the student mentor is more of a program counselor more than anything. They ensure you stay on track and have the resources to complete your classes. I have rarely interacted with any course mentors. Many of the current ones have a Masters but they are seeking doctoral degrees now.
